London to Brighton bike ride

They wont accept returns :\. And I dont want to take it back because It feels like I'm just being a pain in the ass to them tbh.

What do you mean you were doing 25mph/hour speeds? 25mph into the wind too? I dont see what could be wrong with the bicycle if the seat and handlebars is positiond, apart from the pain I found it quite a good bike, only 18 gears but I've done around 70 miles on it so far I think.

You can fix things with seat posts and stems, but there becomes a point where its just the wrong size.

Im 5 10 and ride what theyd probably consider a med. Depends on their sizings really.

So they are all different for each sort of bike? Just like size 12 in one shoe is different to size 12 in another? I am confused, so would you say my frame is deffenitly too small for me? I dont know if I should try raising the handle bars, see the problem is doing that then I wont be able to get as low not that getting on the drop bars even does allow me to go faster than on top of the bars.

That at one point, for a while, our average speed (as shown on a GPS device) was 25mph.

Off the top of my head, and I don't have the data anymore so can't look back, up hills and into winds we'd be doing around an average of 18-20mph, and on faster parts of the course we'd get up to 25-28mph.

Guy in halfords said it was ok for me, surely I can alter the seat and handlebars to suit me? :(.

The guy in Halfords was an idiot. That frame is going to be too small for you and the back/neck pains prove it.

They have sold you incorrect goods. Take it back.

What Size Am I?
Size Height
Small 5'4"-5'7"
Medium 5'7"-5'10"
Large 6'0"-6'3

or the Focus Cayo

What Size Am I?
Frame Height
XS/50 -5'5"
S/52 5'5-5'7"
M/54 5'7-5'9"
L/56 5'9-6'0"
XL/58 6'0-6'2"
XXL/60 6'2"+

Now can you see why small is wrong and why my wife who is tiny has a small and me being of average height (5'10") has a medium.

You really need to be fitted for a road bike.

Am i right in thinking the route takes them thou Redhill ? Or Reigate ?
Goes east of them. Here and here is the route on google maps. The first has altitude but the second is easier to follow as the route line is thinner.

The bike ride is a nice day out and not too difficult if you choose a relaxed pace. There are the dreaded uphill sections but you'll always find people walking them so you wont feel like the odd one out if you stop and push. There are plenty of rest stops with food and drink and a real village fete feeling atop Turner's Hill, the spiritual halfway mark.

It took me 8 hours last year though I was on my Rollerblades

Anyone done the Dunwich Dynamo?

Ok, I'll take it back, but I've only got around £300 for a new road bike. Now what difference will I feel when I get a medium frame? Also could the reason I find it amazingly hard into 15mph+ wind be due to the small frame? I mean other day when it was windy I was slowing down to proberbly near walking speeds :(, and I dont believe its my fitness thats making it soo hard, I dont think I am that unfit.

See I made a thread about buying a bicycle and they were all recommending the hybrid ones with the flat handle bars but I think I need a road bike as I want speed really.

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360031621&N=Giant SCR 4

or if you can get to £380

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360031634&N=Giant SCR 3

15+ mph headwind would slow me down a lot too. But at least with the right size frame the power from your legs will be going more efficiently into the pedals and thus the wheels.

See apart from the frame size the top bike would be a downgrade, as the shifters are tiagra I think on my Carrera vanquish with 18 speed, apparently the sora gears are awfull?

I might be able to extend to 380 but is ordering online ok? How do some people manage 22mph + into strong 20mph+ headwinds? sounds amazingly hard.

Sora gears are not awful. Who told you this rubbish? The Giant SCR3 is a very good bike for £380 and has an excellent frame that you can upgrade the bits on if you want to at a later date. Don't get too hung up on what components a bike has. A good frame and a bike that fits are far more important.

It's more about having the correct fitting bike that weighs as little as possible but in the end it comes down to how fit the rider is. Somebody my hight who is fitter than me will get the same bike to go faster.

I have no problem pushing a bicycle really fast, its just sustaining the speed, just too hard in the wind even on the drop bars.

If I decide to get that SCR3 should I order it off the site you linked? I know Halfords dont do them.
