Fair price for a 02 e46 m3?

I always wonder why convention dictates we calculate depreciation as a percentage.

50% is indeed very good - but its lost £30k. Had you spent £40k on a regular M3 and 3 years later it was worth only £10k you'd be properly miffed - 75% depreciation! Awful!

Yet in reality the loss is identical...

I was just stating what the financial position was with my car, just for info really. I honestly couldn't care less if it was completely worthless right now, because I chose to spend £60k on it, it's fully paid for, and I've had my moneys worth of pleasure out of this car... infact I think I've had more than £60k of fun in this car :D and I still love it to bits.

Oh I appreciate that and everything you've said is correct - that is considered low depreciation by the convention with which depreciation is measured.

I was merely questioning the logic of the accepted convention ;)

Hey Niall - totally OT, but what did you get for your 530i? Interested to know what the market is like ;)

Email me if you don't wanna post here - ta man :D

hi Mark

sold it for €17,500, i think i was lucky, there was a similar black 530i with slightly more miles and slightly lower spec for 14,650! its still there i think

the imola red and m paras sold it for me!

Ive got a 2001 and i cant see them dropping far below 10 grand in the future - i paid just shy of 15k for mine in october and i'd imagine it was worth 13-14 now.

They do get through tyres mind, and you DO NOT (see my topic i started about a skid out in my M3) want to run with tyres that are any way approaching 'thin tread' unless you want to end up in a nice spin out when you least expect it.

I paid 530 quid for a full set of fitted 18 inch continentals back in december and its been sweet as a nut ever since.

Dont bother with the warranties since they arent worth it any more - the excess will stop any low claims, and theres a ceiling on the maximum claim of something silly that would put an end to any claims for anything big. Your better off buying a decent car and being able to finance repairs should anything bad happen.

Stonking motors though - ive put 10k on mine in 4 months and its turned the daily commute from something i once dreaded, to something i almost look forward to .... kinda ;)

I got 10K's worth of enjoyment out of it on a trip to Maccy D's, I think you're selling it short! :p

Oh I think you are kidding yourself. Give it 12 months and there will be plenty on or below £10K

Why? E39 M5's are about to (So far only the really dodgy ones have) and E36 M3's did so many years ago. What makes you think the E46 is different?

e36 M3 has filled up the market below £10k.

That's a great price - really hope mine shifts soon! I can't let it go for 17.5k though!!

Not thinking they wont dip under 10k is more about the fact that e36 M3's are sticking about that price, and not depreciation bringing them to that level.

They do? .... oops, i thought they were around the 7-9k mark... Fair do's :)

14k was pretty much the lowest you could go around september last year though .... but 30-40% in 9-6 months seems a bit steep :)

I looked over a year ago at '36 M3's, they were starting at £5k last winter, they are (as said) down to approx £3k now for the worn high mileage examples.

There is absolutely no reason to think that the E46 wont follow, i expect sub £10k examples to be available in the next year. I mean who buys them? They are pretty much the most expensive cars to insure bar none, they have £50k running costs, and to most poeple they are the same as a much much cheaper 318ci sport. Mass production high maintenance limited appeal cars like this will always bomb.

I mean who buys them?

Chavs who want to look 'well bling' but don't appreciate the running costs. They will thin skimp on them and wreck them, meaning the chances of buying a really nice BMW, even more so an M, once it gets beyond about 7 years old is hugely low.

They all end up falling into the hands of those who cannot look after them and once this has happened, you dont want one.

Buy one now, before they become sheds. I'd rather buy a £15k M3 now from its original owner than the same car in 3 years time for £7k after it's had 4 previous owners and a set of Wan Li's fitted.

I wanna know how these "chavs" justify the insurance for them, i can insure a Ferrari 599 for less than a BMW M3 for gods sake
