DELL XPS M1530

I ordered my XPS M1530 with the 8600M GT and 120GB 7200rpm on the 11th and it was scheduled to arrive on the 28th. However, I just checked my order status and they said they dispatched it today (19th)!

What I want to know though, is that should I expect to receive a call of some kind to confirm when they are arriving? It says it will be delivered by Walsh Western. I believe someone did try and call my house this morning, but it was quite early and seeing as my dad doesn't like companies phoning so early and waking him up, he pretty much hung up!

yep walsh western called me up at around 9:30 am, it was an automated call you just need to confirm the estimated delivery date (usually next day) and choose whether to receive it in the morning (8am - 1pm) or in the afternoon (1pm - 6pm).

How are people here finding their screens and which screen do you have?

I'm finding my 1400x900 panel to be great its brightly lit with no bleed. Viewing angles are also very good, horizontal and vertical both very good. I believe the 1400x900 panel is also brighter than the others.

With walsh western's call my answer phone took the message as I wasn't in.. the system automatically selected an AM delivery for me. Also Business post was the end courier that got it to my door.. Walsh Western proper mental name :D

Got mine today :D

Comes with the normal mess of useless partitions from dell so that getting a full make over now and will end up with dual boot XP & Vista. Though think I may have mucked that up so might need to re-do it.

You know with the Outlet can you only pay with Credit Cards?

I mean I have my Visa Debit Card thats linked directly too my bank could I use that or do I HAVE to use a credit card? :)

I will be partitioning it as I need Linux too. I doubt I will really need online help though. Haven't had to for the past decade or so :) This will be my 3rd laptop in 4 years and I've never had a problem which I couldn't fix myself.

Ok, I did have one problem but that was with the apparantly 'dangerous' iBook battery that I had to send back and get replaced :)

I think they do accept visa debit, it says they dont but try it anyway, some say they go through ok.

Outlet pickings have been very very poor the last two weeks, no free delivery and no £55 or £95 off, not many drops as well.

This is last one i got:

Does anyone know where i can find a Hard Drive Carrier for HDD bay #2 and a Interposer (interfaces HDD to laptop) For the M1530?

I want to add a 2nd drive but i've read I need to put this in first to hold the hard drive in place.

Can't seem to find them on Dells site at all?

Thanks.

Didn't know the M1530 could take a 2nd hard drive internally.... I thought that was just the M17xx range.... Would be good to be corrected as I'll have 2 disks which I could use. If you do find out, please post in the thread.

Just received my M1530 this morning and first impressions are positive. I love the design of it, and all the accessories.

I'm trying to format the whole hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows XP Professional but I'm stuck at the moment because:

1. it says 'Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer' on a blue screen. What I've found so far on Google is that I may have to change some hard drive setting in BIOS. Has anyone had this message before and what have they done about it?

2. is it okay to delete the 'Recovery' partition? It's currently taking up about 10GB by default, and although I could do without 10GB as this won't be my main storage computer, what would happen if I deleted it? And is it recoverable, say using the recover disks if I ever had to send the laptop back to dell? I'm planning to create 3 partitions as I always do: C drive for Windows, D drive for all my main stuff, and a third partition for when I install Linux later

You just change the setting in the bios, from sata to ahci , something like that, simple.

i wiped mine completely, you can do what you want with it.

Cool thanks for the swift reply. Changed it from AHCI to ATA and had to disable the Flash Cache Module at the same time. I do have another question however:

- at the Windows XP Setup page, there is a partition named '-: Partition1 [FAT] 118MB <109 MB free>'. Seems kinda important. Maybe it's best I leave it alone? Sorry, just curious about everything here with my brand new laptop! I have deleted the partition 3 however, as I won't be using the MediaDirect thing on Windows XP or ever

I just deleted it all, and created one big partition the size of the drive in ntfs.

1. Change AHCI to ATA. It will ask you disable the flash stuff...
2. Should be fine to delete recovery partition if you are planning on installing XP.
