my 74 gb raptor makes a clunking noise and windows no longer boots up. when i put in the original CD driver for vista, it boots up to the point where i can install or repair windows but the drive is no longer detected.

my PC was on a filing cabinet and it fell off it suddenly, the whole case of the PC was shattered (made of plastic) and the parts still work except the raptor.

(1) would WD cover this under warranty?

(2) Also how can you get hold of a WD return box to ship the drive bck if you are not using the advanced RMA but merely the standard one? Thanks

Just tell them it stopped working and wrap the hdd in a load of bubble wrap and stick it in a small box.

They'll prolly have an idea if they open the hdd, have seen how damaged a fallen running hdd can get but i doubt they'll go that far. Client of mine dropped a 75GXP yrs ago and the glass platters shattered, somehow IBM bought the cover note that i put : massive platter failure (exploded??) :D

Yes, but we all know how reliable those drives weren't lol.

Ha! Try to get an IBM rep to admit that :D I had i think 5 incarnations of the same drive from constant RMA and replacements, none lasted over two months and i never got that 'magic' one that stayed alive, gave up after drive replacement 5 died. With clients i gave up after 1st replacement died and eventually contacted all of those whom i used 75GXPs with to warn them and offer swaps, quite a few died, theres 2 i know of still alive today though, shocking!

Well Iwas a gluten for punnishment and bought 2 x 60 gig 120 GXP's when they were £60 each for running a RAID array. Then sold them 3 months later to a chap here on the Members Market, and as far as I know they are still going.
