Ohh dont get me wrong, they are both brilliant engines, however the turbo has a higher power potential per £ than the vr6, it is also lighter.

How much lighter though?

Everyone keeps saying its lighter, but by how much?

Not quite right...

Depends entirely on the budget and application. If you have a grand to throw at it, you'll get bigger gains from the 1.8t than the VR6. If you have five grand, the VR6 wins hands down.

Five grand gets you well over three litres in capacity, an 8,000rpm+ limit, forced induction and the kinky side of 450bhp (and obscene amounts of torque) from the VR6 while remaining reliable...

Then we have the fact that this is a swap rather than an OEM installation which means the VR6 is far cheaper to start with...And he won't have sump clearance issues either ;)
it is also lighter.
Marginally. It's also more complicated, more fragile, more temperamental...The VR6 is virtually a 'fit and forget' solution.

As the saying goes, there's no replacement for displacement...But forced induction can level the playing field. Put 1bar into an 1800cc engine and 1bar into a 2800cc engine and you'll get more out of the bigger mill.

Stinky - 'Stage 2' is meaningless. Different tuners do different things...What is the guy offering exactly for two grand?

This being my point, he will never really want any more than 300 brake. It is far cheaper to get to 300 brake using a 1.8t than it is to use a VR6.

Edit: Plus by the time you have added a blower to the vr6 it will weigh a fair whack more. Blowers arnt light nor small.

http://www.europeancarweb.com/tech/techletters/0000ec_volkswagen_questions/index.html suggests around 80lbs or around 35Kg in real money.

As I said previously, relocate the battery to the rear (20Kg?) and you're almost sorted.

I don't think that weight is an issue here. Certainly those with VR6-powered mk2s don't say the weight effects the handling.

By all accounts, the same engine in a mk1 is a nightmare though...

Including the extra initial cost of the engine and conversion parts...? ;)

35kg is nothing then. Obviously the position of the engine may have as big of an effect but a full bottle of screen wash is 5kg. You could always fit a lighter bonnet and move the battery and your there.

It is a fair point, but 2k for a blower is quite a lot......

Seems cheap to me too, off the shelf turbo conversion for my car is around 5-6k, ITBs being slightly cheaper at £3500 :(

Is still a fair whack considering you can get a new turbo, set of injectors and remap for prolly less than a grand for a 1.8t if you shop around.

obviously il say vr6 as i have one, even though its dieing rather quickly now , as said before though check the engine over before buying it, it ifs runable that is, any blue smoke on run down id walk away.

due to the design there quite prone to bore wash, you'll then need a new block.

also check the serpentine belt tensioner has been done, if not do it because it can snap then your buggerd and need a new engine.

more info here.

I've had both. MK3 VR6 (with 2.9 TB, tubular manifold, downpipe, exhaust etc about 190bhp if i remember correctly) and Octy vRS currently (chipped to 210-220 bhp).

VR6 was simply an animal. OK cornering wasn't great neither was the car itself. But the engine tune and torque at any revs was fantastic. It's didn't hang about either ask will gill, and the heavy lump got it off the line well.

I seen one just like miune at santa pod, but with a supercharger. It was insane, the noise and the speed. Incredible.

The 1.8T I have now is faster, just, but delivers the power silently with no fuss or drama. The sound isn't anything special - just generic 4 pot noise. But with an open filter and a single box I can imagine it would be something more special.

On balance i've gone for the 1.8T for the potential to produce a good sound track and the ease of getting 350bhp by chosing the right turbo, injector and intercooler. No internal mods required.
