Xbox 360 true power?

Yes :)

Take a look at an interior on one of the Mass effect side quests(for example) and look at how many textures and models are repeated throughout the same environment. Very easy to maintain texture rez if you reuse the same small pool of textures over and over. Many of the sidequests are literally the same environment with slightly different enemies in them. Also look at the vehicle sections, they arent particularly impressive either.

Sorry mate, but Mass effect and Halo 3 are not the pinnacle of what the 360 and PS3 can do.

Since when does having a similar style of CPU Architecture make the 360 a Mac? PowerPC cored CPU's are used in a lot more things than just old Macs! And, now that Apple moved to Intel CPU's does that mean all PCs are Macs and vice versa, or the old Xbox a Mac? Besides, system architecture is a lot more than just the processor at the heart of the design, let alone the software side of things.

PowerPC cores are at the heart of all the current gen consoles:

360 - Triple cored PPC
PS3 - The Cell's main core is PowerPC
Wii - Broadway CPU is PowerPC (as was the Gekko in the Gamecube)

IBM are certainly laughing all the way to the bank!

In an attempt to make this thread constructive. I'm currently doing an MEng and therefore have a couple of business modules. I had to read a few papers to revise for it and I remember from one of them a bit about where IBM have screwed up in the past by allowing other companies to produce parts of the PC architecture that it created and therefore lost market share and money.

The paper is about the modularity of modern PC's (well fairly modern as the article is from the 1993 Harvard business review)

Here's the paper if anyone wants to read it. From what I remember it is pretty interesting Morris and Fergusson

On a 42" TV the 600p CoD4 still looks fantastic.
Depending how far you sit away, I doubt it looks anywhere near as fantastic 7 odd feet away, 720P starts to look rough from 4 feet or so away from my 37".

Mass Effect had to reuse textures and still comes out with a dodgy framerate and so forth, how does that not tell you it isn't the pinnacle of the 360?

The 360 is a very powerful machine, its just that Mircosoft made the games do the talking while Sony went on about how powerful the Cell chip is but its nothing with poor designed and implemented games.

Got a Sony SXRD 55" 1080p screen here.
Sitting about 6ft from the screen Cod4 looks blurry as hell on the 360:(
Can't wait for the nextgen consoles:p
Consoles that actually have the power to run games 720p above with decent graphics and a steady framerate!

Anti aliasing and nice particle effect do wonders for the game. Halo looks rough no matter how far away I am because of low resolution combined with no AA.

Fair enough but so far all 720P games fall under my rule of looking rough just a few feet away, but that's to be expected I suppose.

Kinda wish I could sit further back when playing the consoles but my wall limits that. :o

I suppose I couldn't give a flying **** about graphics so I'm a bit less picky in that regard.

Getting good peformance from any console or even PC is about balancing every aspect of the game from memory usage, graphics quality to the CPU hit of AI. They didnt get the balance quite right thats all. Despite that, the game is very good imo.

Hmmm, I have come back to have a good read of the flame war this thread was bound to produce and find the arguement has gone completely off track and isn't what I was expecting at all...

...guess I will have to get the ball rolling myself!

There is no way that the 360's CPU is more powerfull than the CBE in the PS3. Regardless of it having 3 cores and 2 threads per core so therefore "supposedly" having equivalent to 6 cpu's, it just doesn't cut the mustard next to the supercomputer power of PLAYSTATION 3.

55" blimey, you would have to sit at the end of the garden, to view that without it looking blurry :D

COD4 looks blurry even on my lowly 40" 1080p screen :(
