HM Revenue & Customs letter

Slight rant but still related:

If you ever end up with the government owing you tax, make sure you go on and on at them till they send it to you (because it gets put to the back burner otherwise).
When my dad closed down his business last year (he was self employed, owned the business), the government owed him tax. Also owed my mum, as she was a partner in the business. He got his tax back after months and having to phone the relevant office a number of times, mum was told that she wouldn't get hers as it was a bit under £10 and they normally don't make payments that are under that amount !! ******* cheek! You can imagine the letters and threats we'd get if it was us that owed them just under £10 eh? Anyway, we made sure we got that out of them. Imagine how much they must be sitting on that they've told people they don't pay back!

Anyway, yeah it's a fairly simple form, I remember having to fill something similar out (or part of one, perhaps my employer did it ) when I first started work (may have been a bit different, it was over 10 years ago!)

I filled one out once. I think they needed it as my employment history was full over overlapping PT jobs, and working whilst in employment etc.

TOok ages to fill it all in, and i had to go onto extra sheets etc.

But after a couple of months I got a decent rebate on the tax I'd paid :D

I meant to reply to that a while back. When I got mine, I filled it in and sent it back. Shortly afterwards (January), I got some tax back. :D

I imagine they just ask you to confirm your earnings and employment details to see if they owe you anything, especially if you have moved in and out of employment. That's twice I have received tax back after filling this form.

I had one a few days ago too, fortunately i dont have to pay tax on my earnings. Im in full time education :D

You fail at tax. You do have to pay tax even if you are in full time education, but you may not exceed your personal allowance and as such may be able to make an election for tax to not be deducted from your wages by PAYE as they will not exceed said allowance.

Oh yeah, forgot about the allowance  fortunately i wont pass it for the year i dont think.

I only work part time which I thought ment you didnt get taxed? also on my wage slips there isnt any tax just my hours and rate.

Just out of total interest.
Whatever gave you the impression that only working part time meant you were exempt from paying tax?

Why does everybody seem to think just because you're a student or working part time means you're exempt from tax?

I got one when I didn't have a job and didn't fill it in straight away then forgot about it/lost it. Now I've got a PT job and I've been paying too much tax cos my P45 was 2 years old and they'll claim they didn't know what I was doing in the 2 years when I was just slummin it at uni.

I wish I'd just filled it out and sent it back.

probably because a lot of students who work part time in low-paying jobs never earn over their personal allowance, and so don't pay tax. Then tell their friends they don't pay tax, and they never really bother to find out why.

I send those letters out :D

It's hardly a must to fill in but it's helpful if you do. Some of the moaners and ranters in this thread are clueless.

do we have to put things like OTC on those forms? I mean, it's not a proper job and I don't get a P60 from it or anything (and I haven't actually been in ages so don't get paid for it at the moment) but we do get payslips and a little income.

Well you are meant to put any earnings down.

Did you pay tax on it? You earnt any more money this tax year?

Just think of your own interests tbh, if you never paid tax on it and they don't know about it, I can't see any good reason to mention it...

I've never paid any tax on it, but did pay NI I think.

In summer 2005 I had a job at tesco for 4 months and paid £100 tax which I still haven't claimed back

then between Sept. 2005 and Dec 2006 I went to OTC and made a bit of money, but not enough to push me over my allowance for 2005/06 or 06/07. Didn't pay any tax on any of it, but did pay NI.

then in August '07 I started working at tesco again, and was on BR tax code until this month, when I finally got changed to 522L WK1 (is that Right? the one from the first tesco job was ###L X) I've earned £4100 and paid £860 or so tax so far since August and there's no way I'll be over the Personal Allowance by April 5.

Should I automatically get that 860 back at the end of the year, or will I have to fight for it? And what about the £100ish from the job in '05?
