Help my PC is just constantly freezing...no idea why.

I assumed he would've checked all cables first.

Scotty... Boot from the live CD again. When It's up and running go into

System/Administration/Partition Manager.

(give me some leeway here, it might not be EXACTLY as I state... Partition Manager only lives on the Live CD so I cant "dummy run" it on my active system)

From within Partition Manager select the new drive or any drive you want formatting. There is an option there for what filesystem you want on it.

Select NTFS

Click APPLY

Theoretically..... Robert will be your Fathers Brother. If it does it Ok.. Then it has to be a borked windows CD

[EDIT]

Ok.. I just installed GpartEd. I believe this is the manager used by the installer. looking in my system menu its not called Partition Manager its Partition Editor

Just looky at THIS Screengrab to see what I'm piffling on about.

The NTFS option is ghosted on my screeny coz its already formatted to NTFS

but if its the CD it wouldn't freeze during a format would it

Its not the hdd config (not sure what that is) but i have never touched that before.

I will try another windows cd.

In the bios you can set the sata hdd options. You should set the sata driving to "strong" if there is an option to do so. And try switching between sata and ide mode. Also see if you can update the bios.

I only checked the thin coloured one, not the actual sata power connector. Anyway its working!!! :D i got a new xp home cd which i borrowed from a mate and it works. Its installed and everything.

the only problem i have is it says the cd key is invalid and i have 30 days to activate and i sure as hell aint paying £65. This is a genuine windows xp home (2002) cd and not a copy.

thanks for all your help tho, cant believe its been months and the problem was with the cd..:o I didnt even think of that because it installed it originally fine so it must have got damaged or something.

This is weird can anyone explain this???

So I thought it was the cd right as XP Home formatted and installed perfectly with no problems. So I thought I would put XP Pro back on, from another CD not the faulty one. I formatted with the new XP Pro cd and began installing Windows and guess what? It freezes every time randomly during the windows installation just like the other XP Pro cd.

So WHY does it work with XP HOME but not Pro? I have used the Pro cd before with no issues. I should point out that both the XP Pro CDs are backups of genuine versions whereas the XP HOME cd is the actual genuine cd but thats not gonna make any difference as ive used em before without any problems

sooooo my question is what does XP PRO have that HOME doesnt that is causing my PC to freeze during installation??:confused:

You might just have a bad copy of XP pro.

Just cos it works the first few times does not mean it will work forever. All you need is a slight smudge mark or scratch on an OS cd and your buggered basically.

not 2 bad copies though..one was a new cd anyway.

seems strange to me that since you installed that card your trouble began even though the
card is no longer there leading me to think that the damage was caused during the installation, if the psu was switched on it could cause a short or spike causing damage to motherboard or other components .

maybe, i might have just turned the PC off, i dont always turn the PSU switch off when installing stuff (usually do though).

I tried upgrading to Pro when i had installed Home but it didnt like that either, just froze as usual installing. Well at least it works perfectly with Home anyway.

well its still freezing :( The ide cable that connects the dvd drive to the motherboard had a small rip in it but i removed that and it still does it (i think, it restarted anyway). yeah the pc also restarts itsself automatically sometimes??

i also get a windows message pop up that says something like one of the usb devices attached to the pc isnt working properly..it disapears before i can read it all. i dont know if thats got anything to do with this but anyway..

any other suggestions i can try??

I have not read through the entire thread so this may have been advised.

Have you tried any other different cd/dvd drives?

no but i have totally unplugged both the floppy and the dvd drive and it still does it.

by the way in my device manager under "other devices" i have a "pci device" and a "unknown device" no idea what either of them are  the only othe rpci card in there is my sound card which is ok and updated. i have disabled both of em but it makes no difference. what could they be??

what can i use to check my voltages and temps? just to rule that out?

I have a gigabyte board and it worked great at 333 for a couple of weeks and then started freezing randomly. I went back to stock, checked all hardware, did memtest, replaced drivers, removed bloatware etc and thought I had it sussed.

Put it back to 333 and it started freezing again. YMMV.

Have you tried underclocking your processor?

My friend was having exactly the same problems you're having and gave me his computer to fix. He'd been running with a very mild OC (only 200MHz) for a couple of years. Computer was freezing during install of Windows, or randomly freezing if Windows was successfully installed etc., just like yours.

I tried everything to fix it, and in a last ditch effort underclocked the processor by 500MHz. Sorted out the problem.

Your temperatures may be fine, but it's still possible that your processor has been damaged by overclocking. Another possibility is that it's asking for a little more VCore. It's also possible that your motherboard has been damaged through the OC. Try underclocking the processor first to see if this sorts your problem.

its all on stock at the moment. i took this pic ages ago in late 2007 when my pc was working perfectly..

this is now when it keeps freezing and sometimes resetting itself for no reason..

are there any obvious problems that could be causing freezing/resetting issues?? the top pic was at overclocked settings this current one is just bios defaults.

Honestly, try actually underclocking the processor.

Not only will this ease up the processor, but the motherboard as well.

In my view, you have an issue with one or other of the above.

Well, to my eyes pcwizard is reporting a few things wrong here -:
Pic 1 - processor temp 187c and mainboard 255c HOT
Pic 2 - processor and chassis fan's at 10rpm damm slow

I think you may have a heating problem, I have just had it with a new build and windows became unstable, errors all over the place (just because numbnuts me had the freezer pro heatsink and fan facing the wrong way)

ok what do i change it to in bios?

currently cpu frequency is 1.8ghz (200x9)

cpu host frequency is 200.

i dont think they are anything to go by thoug. the tuniq tower is on high so the cpu should be fine.
