Ok, I'm looking to buy a digital camera mainly for just school and outtings.. I dont need anything way too over the top just something around £200 will do me nicely..

Preferably the highest megapixel camera (Any chance of 10 or 12?) I can get for that price however I want it to have a decent zoom and good quality lcd screen.

I'm not into cameras as such like I know some of you are and only use digital cameras to take normal photos, not amazinly good proffesional ones.. Im just a general user.

So any advice as to which to buy would be appreciated ;)

Thanks!

Try not to be tempted by huge megapixel counts. Compact cameras around the 7-8MP areas tend to produce better quality images. When lots of pixels get crammed into a tiny sensor it produces very noisy shots.

If you're not bothered about size you could get a decent bridge camera for that price, they would have much better zoom and options to play around with.

Don't let the "mega pixels" count fool you.

10 or 12MP cameras aren't always as good; I've got a Fuji F30 and it's got a mere 6.3MP but it's a heck of a lot better than what Kodak's been throwing off the shelves with 10 or 12MP.

I'd recommend the Fuji F30 or the younger sibiling Fuji F31FD - for it's face detection. Great if you're taking mates pic, not to say the F30 isn't capable. It's a great compact digital camera with a lot of manual controls if you want to experiment as well - you can have Apature / Shutter priority, as well as different scene settings and the standard but sharp Auto mode.

Can be had for around £140 Brand New. £17inc for a 2GB xD card, for 630pictures at the highest settings. By the way, the F30 can take around 450 to 500 shots per fully charged battery... it's amazing!

Edit: If you seek zoom, do what Matt above suggested, get a Bridge camera, the Fuji S5700 gets a lot of thumbs up for its value and quality - 10x zoom compared to the F30's 3x zoom.

Thanks a lot for the replies! Really appreciated.. Yeah I guess thats what most new people think, more megapixels = better. Well, thats what I was drawn in to thinking anyway :P

The Fujis suggested look good, also consider the Canon Digital Ixus 70, 7MP (£142).

Regarding zoom, look at the optical zoom (provided by the lens) rather than the digital zoom (which doesn't provide such good results).

I've got the Fuji S5700, whilst it's bigger than the compacts (obviously) it's pretty good for the price (around £100 now). It's got the 10x optical zoom, good macro settings, and takes SD or XD cards. It has got full manual controls, but I'm very much a noob and still get good results on auto mode.

I recently went shopping with my Mum and we came back with a Samsung - she liked the fact that it was black. Have to say actually that it's a cracking camera - from a total point and shoot to giving a surprising number of options.
