the forum and swearing

There are words that seem to be allowed here, specifically 'bloody', 'sod' and 'bugger', since those are particularly inoffensive ones. Also I think 'bitch' may be allowed in certain contexts.

Most people resort to swearing as a lazy choice of adjective - describing someone as a ****** ****** or similar is far easier than actually working out that they are are an arrogant, narrow minded, uneducated idiot. The latter is more descriptive and in my opinion more insulting than the former.

LOL!!!

As a lot of people here have obviously got well above average IQ's - maybe instead on a swear word - they can INSERT a hard to spell word, that not many people have heard of, that is in the dictionary instead - therefore showing us (below average IQ'ers) how very cleaver and informed we should aspire to be together with the correct use of English when trying express ones repressed feelings about bikers (in particular) online!!!!

I also think that people who cannot spell properly should also be dealt with accordingly - its just not on!!!!

that is one of the things I wanted to clear up as in the past such things used to be commented on or edited.

No they didn't.

Well it irritates me, as i've been temp suspended twice at least for swearing (accidentaly, you know when you type a huge thread and something slips through), then I see umpteen other people getting away with it on a daily basis without an eyelid batted.

If you type it yourself you have no-one else to blame. You have been suspended three times for the same word! No-one 'gets away with' the word you have multiple suspensions for.

According to that Gilly is wrong, either that or the FAQ is wrong. One of them needs correcting.

Neither are wrong.

Thats strange as I have been Suspended for doing that a cupple of times without noticeing. And so has one of my friends. Hmmmmmmmmm :/.

No you haven't.

...instead on a...cleaver ... exress...

...I also think that people who cannot spell properly should also be dealt with accordingly - its just not on!!!!
Hoping that this was done on purpose.

A lazy choice of adjective? Swearing has been an integral part of the English language for centuries and is possibly one of the most satisfying parts of our mother tounge... our expertise in the area as well as the sheer variety of words we can amploy while doing it is pretty much unrivalled in the world. And funnily enough, intelligent people also swear... a lot.

what part of you actually believes that swearing isn't right? just what you've been indoctrinated with?

The part of me which has a sufficiently good command of the english language to articulate what I mean without resorting to swearing.

Don't get me wrong, if I hit my thumb with a hammer then I'm likely to let a sweary slip out (although I'll try not to if I'm in front of the kids), however if I'm writing something down (whether forum, email or letter) then I just don't see any need for it.

What word was that then? :D

He got two weeks for it as a third offence with the same word last time, don't extend that! :D

You're missing the point. Just because it is everyday language for some people doesn't mean that it is right. Personally I congratulate Spie on taking the high moral ground on this rather than letting these fine forums slide down to the level of many similar places.

Quite apart from this argument - what would your suggested alternative be? No restrictions at all, or just some 'stronger' words being banned? The latter scenario would be even more difficult to police than the current arrangements.

Your missing my point I think, my post is no way condoning swearing in every day language or on the forums
It's simply stating a few facts

Can I just ask, why aren't swear words simply added to the filter? Or am I missing something here.

My own opinion of it is that this would simply encourage **** to be littered all over the place.

It also keeps the numbers of the real riffraff down :)

I could've sworn "****ed" wouldn't have been allowed a while back and to have seen it edited out before.

Also (delete if still not allowed) but i've seen people write "****" now which seems to be allowed when it didn't used to be.

I don't really care much either way just thought i'd add that.

No that isn't allowed, but doesn't carry an automatic suspension like some words (and never has done)

It is used a lot though, so is difficult to keep on top of

I have noticed recently that there seems to be a lot of swearing appearing on here, most is starred out which is fine however there seems to be more and more cases of it not being fully starred out.

The FAQ says:

If you pop over to the motors section, Mohinder has a thread about bikers. In this thread alone there are currently 5 cases of swearing that has not been fully starred out. Such as aposting **** with ed on the end. What's worse is that a Don has actually quoted one such thread and not even corrected it.

Now I swear in my home etc, but I am always careful who is about. My little brother often visits these forums for a read and although he hasn't registered I don't really want him thinking that it is ok to use these words when trying to talk about something.

Are we supposed to stick to the FAQ or can we just follow it whenever we like?

OMG! Who do you think you are exactly?

I hate members like you - little brown-nosing creeps.

Just STFU and let the Mods do the Modding thanks.

I have to be honest there was a post with swearing in it "child born out of wedlock" and it was not being used in that context.

Think it stayed up for about 2 days even after being RTM'd. Could have been a low don day I suppose but the action on swearing seems to have slackened of late.

I've noticed this recently or at least it appears that way at times, even after RTMing a post recently it stayed for several hours. However in saying that such matters are normally dealt with quite promptly so maybe it is just a couple of isolated incidents that are sticking in my mind.
