A guy at work is selling his Scooby and has asked whether I am interested in buying as he knew I always liked it.

Its Y reg , silver/pink trim Japanese STi 5R, 280 bhp imodded to 300bhp, I know its well looked after and he has owned it from new.

I asked how many miles it done and he said 95,000 !! which was a lot more than I thought.

He said he has been told its worth around £10 k

This seems quite high to me with that mileage but i dont really know much about them.

Any Scooby experts on here know how much its roughly worth ? :)

Just Googled & came up with those two. Your mates sounds dear to me. I know nothing though but Google is my friend ;)

Sure it's a 5? Y reg should be a 6.

If it's a 5, it's expensive, if its a 6, it sounds about right, maybe a touch high with that mileage.

Does this mean that the two cars i have quoted are not the same car ??? Clue me up Rotty.

The first one you posted sounds like a modified UK car. The second is a P1. The one in the OP is an STi Type R, a 2 door Japanese import model never officially sold here. Its very different to the UK Turbo. The P1, however, is based on a Type R.

R I'd guess means Type R, which is the 2 door version of the STi model. The 5 is the version number, Subaru produced 6 versions of the STi in classic form, each one being slightly different. The 6 has a different spoiler and a different colour dash iirc, but more importantly for pricing, being the last version produced in the classic shape, is newer and rarer than the 5.

Its overpriced and high mileage but as he has owned it from new you need to ask yourself what price do you put on knowing the exact history of the car?

I knew everything about mine which was worth paying more for IMO.

Personally I wouldn't buy it at that price to be fair - 8K would be acceptable if it was spot on. That price will get you either a mint decent mileage P1 or a mint low miles Bugeye Prodrive STI or even Blobeye STI with less miles than that Type R. Personally I don't like blobs.

Only ones worth buying with 10K IMO.

Imprezas will last forever when treated well. As Edd says, you're looking to buy the car from the single owner so you have the advantage of knowing the whole history of the car - how often the oil was changed, any work thats been done to it etc, if thats important to you the go for it. Personally if it was my money I'd spend 10K on a newer Bug/Blob STi.

Also, seen as no one else has yet mentioned it, how old are you and what do you drive at the moment? Import imprezas are group 20, so you will need to be well lubed up when you go insurance hunting as they will absolutely bend you over unless you're 25 plus and have a few years NCB behind you.

I wouldnt pay 10k for an STI Type R. They current market is saturated and there are plenty of bargains to be had if youre genuinely interested in buying an impreza. The Type R is also a seriously raw drive and not for the faint hearted.

Im over 30 with 8 years NCB, driving a 206GTi atm.

I got some quotes last night and the cheapest was over £1700 *GULP* , that was just through confused.com. Though only 2 out of the list did provide a quote. It doesn't help living in Bolton :(

Are there specialist insurers out thee who are better with cars like these ?

Have a chat with A-Plan. There is a specific office of theirs who deal with Scoobs which I can't remember at the moment, but I'm sure someone will tell you.

Also Adrian Flux are supposed to be good for imports.

Ditto. Type R for me is about £700. Same as Prodrive bug. Little bit less for P1.

Oddly Privilege wanted a tracker for a Type R but not an STI RA - they were happy with a CAT 1 for the RA.

UK Turbo is about £450 or less. I'm currently insuring my 4L Jeep (rebound thing after selling my Impreza!) and Golf for £380 so scoobs aren't cheap.

If the car is a daily drive I wouldn't get a Type R. If you want a UK turbo as a daily I wouldn't be too worried about mileage near 100K as long as its backed up properly. I believe its worth spending the money on low milers as the price of them will start to creep up soon and best left for weekend best.

If I had one car and it was to be a daily I'd get a Prodrive Bug for around 9-10 with sub 45K miles, tweak the engine and handling a bit and enjoy. :)
