Think I'm getting close to deciding on the system I'm hopefully going to build soon. It's a bit of a compromise between the system I'd like and not going mad with the cash.

I'm almost 100% sure on these bits:
Case
Motherboard
GFX
PSU
CPU. As it's my first build I don't want to ruin an expensive CPU. I'll feel more comfortable experimenting with overclocking this one. Then I'll probably buy a decent quad later in the year.

Not sure about the rest:
Vista, need to try installing a few of my programs on it before I switch.
Tuniq, in me best manuel voice "i know nothing" so I'm trusting the judgement of the masses on here! :)
RAM, 4GB? 2GB? & timings don't mean an awful lot to me being a noob OCer.

Open for suggestions. TIA

That looks basically fine although I'd question the purchase of Vista 32bit, particularly with 4gb Ram since without a 64bit OS you will only have about 3.5gb usable system Ram.

I don't know too much about that motherboard but since it is based on the P35 chipset it should be fairly decent.

Finally you might want to consider the Seagate 7200.10 250gb as it should be a bit faster than that Samsung.
 
I take your point regarding the RAM, for the price though it does seem to make sense to get 2GB modules. It doesn't really bother me that part of the RAM would be redundant. Anyway, this thread left a lasting impression, particularly the bit where you put 4GB in your spec. :p :)
Maybe I'm being paranoid, but going Vista and 64 bit all in one go I'd be expecting all my software to fail.

My local PC shop swear by MSI boards. I was looking for a decent P35 board with eSATA anyhow.

I'll swap the HDD over to the Seagate. What does the 10 figure represent in its blurb?
 
I did think your name was vaguely familiar. :) I would still go for 4gb even with XP, but I'm saying it for two reasons, highlighting that you lose some Ram under a 32bit OS and noting that if you are buying a new OS then a 64bit one starts to make more sense. It is up to you though, XP and both versions of Vista are pretty good.

The ".10" part of the Seagate refers to the model number, there are now 7200.11s out but they are higher up the range in capacity terms. The 250gb is a bit of an odd model, it is more like the intermediate step between the two model ranges since it uses the newer 250gb platters so it has a single platter which means higher data density and faster overall speed but for some unknown reason they didn't change the model number.
 
Haven't read much info recently about 64 bit OSs regarding drivers and such, but the last time I did look, most people were advising against 64 bit.

There's a bit of me that wants to change to vista, also a bit that says 'get modern' and go 64 bit. BUT, I feel safe with XP 32 bit, better the devil you know and all that.

Maybe I'll head on over to the software forums and do some reading.

there a very few driver problems with 64bit these days. there are one or two, as for old programs, 64bit can run 32bit programmes, but some installers are based on 16bit code, which 64bit OS cant support.

I have had no BSOD apart from when I was finding my stable clock.

I would think about getting a Q6600, i know its old tech, but they are will do 3.3+ some do will do 3Ghz on stock volts. some can get to 4GHz on air. it is grate processor.

if you relay want to play old games, get a cheep (i.e. £45) PC with os, second hand. there sorted
