I can't believe how good Vista x64 is with 4GB memory....

Vista 64 is brilliant :) now do I keep 4gb or slap in another 2x2gb sticks for 8gb :D
LOL. You'd need to strap your PC to the ground if you stuck 8Gb in. :D

Why would you though? Would you really see the difference between 4 and 8Gb? Are you doing anything with your PC that needs 8Gb?

Or do you just want to have 8Gb for the fun of it? :p

the most important reason why people hate vista, (ignoring gaming performance on 2gb, 32bit vista vs 2gb 32bit XP, in which XP is faster).. ofcourse XP cant use 4gb properly and 64 bit vista might have increases (although i havent checked detailed benches).. They hate it because the user interface has become Noob friendly, i have the same feeling with every software, games, and from win98 to XP, i was like, man why is this soo ***** simple. and all added stuff. i dont need a magic frog to tell me step by step instructions how to open windows media player etc. (exagg) but either way i hope it is tweakable enough to as some1 above said, teach it a valuable lesson in mavity

If you must swear please star it out

So is 4 the magic number or will Vista x86 love the number 2 as that's all the RAM I have in my system at the mo.

I've been delaying the upgrade to Vista but now with a Quad installed might take a leap of faith :)

64 bit OS use more ram, as there addresses are 64bits long, instead of 32bits long.

it will be fine with 2GB, but why, DDR2 is sooooooo cheap at the moment, get 4GB you wont regret it

Purely for the fun of it :D

Yup, everything that works on 32bit, works on 64bit (apart from 16bit stuff)

Games work fine, programs run fine and driver support is good, unless you have some dot matrix made in 1905.
no, not every 32bit app/games work on 64bit. i have some that don't work on 64bit..

anyway i have been using 4gb + vista64 since vista was released.. vista64 really uses 4gb very well but since about 2weeks ago its been showing 3328mb. on the post it shows 4gb... ive reinstalled vista but it's still the same.. any ideas??

I've only just installed Vista x64 myself and I have to say.. wow.. love it, my only gripe is authorising every ******* thing. But I can live with that.
Yeah I only made the move to Vista 64 bit last week and it's so fast and has some great features - but the authorizing is very annoying indeed :p

Finally people are realising Vista isnt bad like some people try to make out.

XP is still far superior.
2 of my Vista X64 installs died in 6 months or so...
Yet my xp install is fine still since 2003.

Vista + Hardware changes = Death/problems

XP + hardware changes= Still fast & nippy & stable

Sounds like a bios setting that needs changing to me?

Sure you haven't changed anything in there...?

I tried if with 2GB a few months back without a product ID in trial mode off a friend and found it to be very clunky. I was on an Athlon 64 single core clocked at 3.2Ghz.

So its either the 4GB memory that was needed, or the quad core q6600 i got that made the difference.

I think its mosly the memory. I found that 4GB on XP didn't really do anything for me over 2GB. But vista seems to be caching and uncaching as needed to make full use of the memory when its needed. XP on the other hand was very inefficient. With 4GB there was loads of disk grinding when, quite honestly there shouldn't have been.

Personally think its harder to use than XP but getting used to it and when its 2nd nature I know it will do what I want much faster and everything I need is there right in front of me with Vista, whereas XP you gotta install all sorts of utilities to customize it to your needs.

I don't just mean fancy video effects and eye cand junk here, I mean useful stuff. An actual clock on your desktop, currency calculator, news ticker etc.

XP is also pretty darn ugly, with its fruity looks. Find vista is actually more toned down than XP.

I'd compare XP to one of those gaudy films from the 80s that are supposedly set "....In the year 2029...."...

Sorta blade runner style...(I like the film, its timeless in many ways)

But I don't want that kind of thing in an OS, personally.

I didn't really know how I felt until I tried vista proper tbh but as long as nothing goes **** up I'm loving it.

You & me 3 :D
Last couple of weeks all i have read is how Vista has come into its own. I'm in Skintsville this weekend so all plotted up, A perfect time to dip into the world of Vista.
Only got 2gig & a an old 939 set up so if it's work on mine for me it'll work on anyones.
Worth noting I am addicted to BF2 so if it don't run that as well or better than XP I'll set fire to it & slate it in one sided posts from now till Dooms day :p

Wouldn't bother trying mate with 2GB of ram, especially if you want to play BF2 which needs 2GB to run smooth without hitching on XP.

As i said above this post I tried it a few months back with pretty similar setup to you (2GB mem\s939 single core)...wasn't happy, well I kinda was but it just wasn't seemless. Smooth as silk for the first few hours but once I loaded all me programs and what not onto it....It started to crawl...

Hasn't slowed at all with 4GB\Q6600 though, well statups got slightly slower as stuffs been installed, but thats normal.

Yeah the XP theme makes me want to chuck, did they make it for 6 year old kids or what? Had it changed to windows classic theme since day one, along with classic start menu. Then it feels like 98, but without the constant crashing. :)

Haven't spent more than a few hours at a vista machine, but the fonts look more crisp and the default theme looks pretty polished to me. The laptop I was playing with vista on had 2GB of RAM, everything was snappy enough, apart from open office which really struggled to open in a timely manner.

Got Vista 32 bit ultimate with a 939 x2 4200 with 2gb ram and its fine! No issues with games either?

How is 64bit nowadays. Tempted to get a new rig and 4gb ram.

Vista is pretty good now, I hated it at first because I only had 1GB of RAM. It just wasn't enough and I couldn't understand why it was using so much memory.

"Games Explorer". I like to have my games in different folders according to genre not just plonked in one big folder

You can install your games in any partition/folder you like & vista will just add the start icon Box Art & Info to the Games Explorer for supported games.

I have seen a difference from 1-2 & 2-4 GB of ram, but none from 4-8 which i now have but my SuperFetch is still growing.
