My new WD5000AAKS also says this, yet has black round stickers on ALL 4 holes on the disc, should I remove em, or are they okay?

Why can't you usually cover drive holes ?

There is a little hole on the disk somewhere to let air expand/contract as it heats/cools down. It is of course filtered with a fabric type pad.

OT: Wow, just checked the prod. date, the thing travelled from the factory in Malysia to my home in just 16 days :eek:

I really wouldn't worry about them, if it comes that way from the factory then it will be fine. If it wasn't there would be explicit instructions for them to be removed.

Okay hope so.
But the thign is, I have 5 otehr hdd's in my pc, all also say, do not cover any holes, and they have holes in similair places as those black round stickers are, and all are uncoevered.

And now this hdd says the same, yet has all holes covered :confused:

I wouldn't remove the black stickers, I did by accident on an old drive and its making funny noises, luckily it was only for backups.

Arn't they just anti-tamper stickers? looks to me like they are covering screws if you remove them you'll void your warrenty.

Those black dots are on all 3 of my 500GB AAKS drives.

Haven't had any problems.

They are not, they are hollow beneeth, at least the 2 I felt.

Those black dots are on all 3 of my 500GB AAKS drives.

Shame my 160 gb died completly ( click of death), but at least I'll have 340 gb more space than b4. 1.55 tB

Doesn't rule out the possibility they're covering recessed screws

Just refelt and indeed it seems there are screws under 3 of the holes, the top left one has a massive gap underneeth it though.
In that case though, where are those holes I may not cover ?

I think you will find them on the under side of the drive. About 1-2 mm in diameter close to the motor.

The filter is indeed inside the drive, I've previosly taken some apart, not sure where the intake is tho. And not all the black stickers underneath have screw but they are anti tamper stickers, rather than intakes.
In the top left of this pic you can see a recess where the piece of fabric filter goes, its about 1/2 or 3/4 of an inch long.
