The Budget - Band G Tax £1000!

put the global warming BS down our throats and most of the general public thinks its a good idea to tax big cars...

personally id scrap road tax but increase fuel duty to like double or whatever. That way the people that do the most mileage pay the most, not the ones with expensive/rare cars that dont drive them much at all....

The thing is that normally be the sensible thing to do, however the UK never seem to pick this up and decide to do something completely pointless.

see my stealth edit lol

lets say petrol is 1.04 now... 1.10 without road tax what dif would that make a year?

10k miles would be about the same cost in road tax wouldnt it?

to my current car 115 tax, that petrol price dif would cos only 150 more a year (i think) lol

i need to STOP editing my posts after i posted them and finish my reply FIRST before posting lol

have the tories mad any pledges to reduce the tax burden on motorists?

if they are just going to pander to the green lobby then we will be no better off under them either?!

The government has two formal targets for reducing Britain's climate changing gases.

The first is the one set by the Kyoto protocol, this commits the UK to a 12.5% reduction by 2012.
The second is its long-term goal of a 60% cut in carbon dioxide by 2050. This target is legally binding.

With land transport contributing 22% of CO2 then I guess this is the start of the attack on high polluting vehicles.

Other sectors are also getting the push to reduce emissions so it's not just the motorist that is feeling the pinch.

Anyway, when you are shelling out £65,000 for a Range Rover, is this really going to make a difference?

It affects many 'normal' cars, not just stuff like Range Rovers

Exactly, My S2000 emits 237g/km. Certainly going to put you off buying one if you have to pay an extra £1000.

It's so stupid too, the emissions are based on a completely unrealistic drive cycle. It has zero representation of motorway miles, most of the cycle doesnt even go over 35mph!

If the government are going to introduce or increase tax for "green" reasons that money should be used to fund "green" projects. Darling is playing a dangerous PR game here, I think the "green" social responsibility can only take you so far, is this the straw that breaks the camels back?

226g/KM here - how unlucky, out by 1g

Edit: this tax is on new cars though isn't it?

i also think its a joke. i felt sorry for my bro who picked up an RX8 and told me the tax is £300 a year and going to £400 next year (this year). I think the goverment has once again convinced the majority that big cars are bad and only for the rich and full well knew once this had taken hold it could then tax it all and the majority wouldnt mind (until they found out the truth).

Luckily for me i dont like new cars and enjoy the 80's style to much. But i do giggle when everyone comes upto me at work saying 'so your going to pay £1000 for tax on your range rover then'. I tell them i pay about £200 and the new way of tax is worked out on new cars doesnt effect my 14MPG daily drive. When infact my car must be the worst CO2 car in the town. Just shows its not about the enviroment.

Ive even told the missus that we will referb her car instead of buying a new one later this year only because its on the old tax system and dont want to be sh''''ed by the goverment on tax with a new car.

I think the budget will be horrific tomorrow for the average jo.

S3 for the win :) (223g/m)

Hopefully it will get challenged by car manufacturers and overturned as a stupid, unnecessary tax...

I don't really care as i'm probably never going to buy a brand new car!

What i am worried about is where it will go after this...

IMO its just another stealth tax to balance the books wrapped in a 'green' blanket.

Its getting ever so obvious as they start to run out of ideas to screw over the motorist for more money that the government just endlessly wastes !

Well I for one will now make it my business to leave the biggest **** off 'carbon footprint' I possibly can ! And if you don't like it then I don't ****ing care

It's a pretty blatant punishment of success to be honest, old labour style (and much like the £25 congestion charge). It's got absolutely **** all to do with helping the enviroment.

Tell you what I think - I say we buy a load of gunpowder and somehow we sneak it under the houses of parliament.

Kabloom!!

Who's with me?

Quite right. Instead of doing the difficult task of trying to get people off benefits etc they just take the easy option and take money from decent hardworking people - whilst saying they're "doing it for the environment".
