F1 2007/2008 Winter Testing and Rumours

LOL at Kimi giving her the slip. Don't blame him as she's really annoying...

Agreed, it was awful and embarassing. The programme was pretty good though, anyone know where they were filming the Steve Rider/Martin Brundle exchanges from? Presuming Jerez or another testing track.

In a similar vogue though its unlikely that Ferrari would have emptied the tanks for Massa or Kimi just to prove a point.

Yes it is very difficult to judge any speed / or lack of / in testing as they all have different programmes but at some point during that programme one would think they would empty the tanks to simulate the balance of the car on low fuel - that includes Mclaren and Ferrari and all the others.

Not pointed at you Rpstewart, but I love how (inc ITV-F1 commentators) love to point out that when Ferrari is quick its cause they are running empty and when anyone else is, its because their car has fundamental speed. Hilarious based on the number of wins Ferrari have posted over the last few years :D

The teams also hide things, drivers will be asked to lift off in certain sectors, otherwise known as sandbagging, this is talked about quite a lot. They are watching each other very closely to work out how good each others cars are, not only that, they will eventually copy each others ideas. We only have the times, the spies have a lot more info.

We only have the times, the spies have a lot more info.

Hang on. The FIA told us that there are no spies. The only spies were at McLaren and Ferrari and they have now been dealt with. The FIA are well on top of the spy situation that has been erradicated.

;)

It was a big help for Ferrari, they offered the best people in F1 lots of money to move over from Benetton.

Toyota have tried chucking huge ammounts of money at F1 and it has done them no good.

That's because Ferrari spent their money wisely, hiring the right folk and keeping them.

Toyota hired Mike Gasgoyne then fired him when he started getting results. Then they spent ludicrous amounts of money on Ralf....

Hey. I admit Ralf wasnt the best, but he wasnt the main area where money was being wasted. Toyota have the biggest budget ever seen in F1, yet are languishing in the middle of the pack. I think they need to replace key personnel when it comes to their car design.

Perhaps winning is not a priority for Toyota's F1 team.

I have a lot of time for Patrick, he only opens his mouth once he's sure he's thought everything through. What makes his statements different from a lot of others on similar subjects is how he clarifies them, he knows this will offend the purists but it's also interesting that he's been suggesting this for a while, not just as a reaction to Williams' current form.

It is a good idea & would certainly make things more interesting. The only problem is, what would stop all the drivers just doing slow times?

While the spectacle would be fun, part of me still thinks this is taking the easy way out. If cars cannot overtake it's either the design of the cars, or the track that's at fault. Shaking up the grid is a cheap, casual viewer friendly gimmick.

We still know how these races would end. With two teams having vastly superior cars to the rest of the grid, it would still be one of Kimi, Lewis, Massa and maybe Heiki on the top step at the end of each race. Any variety in this would be down to someone tripping over a "second tier" car that had no business being at the sharp end anyway. Or, being stuck behind another car on a poorly designed circuit that simply won't allow overtaking. And even if someone else  actually won a race using this system, we'd all be slating the guy for only being able to win this way...

It would also rob us of those classic overtaking moves that get remembered for many years afterwards.

Sorry for sounding like an sad old purist. ;) :D
