The Budget - Band G Tax £1000!

What really annoys me about the whole road tax thing is that it actually has no bearing on how much you pollute at all.

I drive a car which emits 228g/km of C02 and as a result, I am public enemy number 1. Im causing all the polar bears to die and I must be taxed constantly until I can take no more and buy a Fiesta.

Meanwhile, your average sales rep in his BMW 118d which emits only 130g/km of C02 is heralded as eco friendly and excellent and rewarded with road tax that costs 23 pence.

Even though he drives his 118d about 3-4 times the mileage I drive my 530i and thus emits double the C02 that I do..

No need to be mean about Fiestas! My ST is a great little car :)

I dont actually want them to do this though, i drive a 300g/km car over 50,000 miles per year and only pay £180 VED :p

I think this is precisely why VED isn't scrapped. They'd **** off more people by making the system fair, because 50% of people (if we're lucky) would be worse off, whereas this way they get to bolster the coffers, safe in the knowledge that an extra £600 isn't going to put someone off buying a brand new, and if it does, then they're cutting emissions.

How much are they taxing china? maybe the government should boycot their exports due to their prolific polluting nature caused by mass construction.

Tbh it will make me all the more defiant, its my money - I earnt it (minus taxes!!! GRR) and ill enjoy the lifestyle I wish.

So there will be a jump to £400 for cars currently in band G, and £1000 on new cars in this band?

only the sun is carrying this

they've not posted if this applies to new car purchaes, or to second hand purchases or both.

also, they've said Band G. but currently this only exists for cars registered on or after 23/03/06 according to direct.gov.uk

but could they introduce a new tax band and backdate it ? the "new tax band" thing could very much indicate they may.

Untill the budget i dont think we can really know. But its putting a right dampner on my idea of owning an 07 plate impreza at some point :(

Yeah mine is in the current £300 tax bracket which I understood was going to £400 next year. Oh well I won't be put off buying "gas guzzling" cars just because it's not green!

The Times has a similar take on things:

"The Chancellor is set to announce a shake-up of car taxation, with people buying the most polluting vehicles heavily penalised and those who go for green alternatives paying less tax. Buyers of “gas-guzzlers” in car tax Band G will be confronted with a first-year charge of more than £1,000 in vehicle excise tax, before it reverts to the current level of £400. Mr Darling will also increase the number of bands from the current seven. Drivers in the lower bands will pay less tax than at present. The higher the emissions, the higher the first year excise duty."

This whole going green and how CO2 emissions are affecting the way we live is one big lie, those who have read up on it and saw a documentary a while back will know all about it.

This is the funniest and saddest thing of it all; that it is just one big lie to rake in money for the greedy and people actually believe they are going 'green' and helping the environment.

Maybe one day (probably when it is too late), this will be fully realised by the public and something will be done about it.

The government has two formal targets for reducing Britain's climate changing gases.

The first is the one set by the Kyoto protocol, this commits the UK to a 12.5% reduction by 2012.
The second is its long-term goal of a 60% cut in carbon dioxide by 2050. This target is legally binding.

With land transport contributing 22% of CO2 then I guess this is the start of the attack on high polluting vehicles.

Other sectors are also getting the push to reduce emissions so it's not just the motorist that is feeling the pinch.

Anyway, when you are shelling out £65,000 for a Range Rover, is this really going to make a difference?

Yep i work at a large uk powerstation, as a result of kyoto from 1st jan 08 we were given 25,000 generating hours or 2015 (whichever is first) then it's lights out. This has happened to a large portion of the uks power industry with no real plans to replace the shortfall in power vs the increase in power usage predicted (more homes etc etc).

i dont think this will be a big deal i expect most manufacturers will soak it up in the sale price of the car.

Regards
Andy
