VTEC drinking Oil

Honda's official stance on it is 1L in 1000-2000 miles depends of course on driving style

VTEC engines by their nature eat oil - if your getting less than 1000 miles to the litre then be worried a VTEC engine not eating oil is just as bad as one eatiing too much

check the usual

Camshaft end seal
Rocker cover gasket
Get sump resealed
Switch to 10w40 full synthetic and oil consumption will go down

remember not all H22s are the same

And everyone always mentions the high oil consumption on the RX-8! I've used just less than a litre in 2000 miles since getting mine. Hope the thicker oil fixes your problem though, I would have though that a 0-30 oil is a bit too thin but having said that, that's what the RX-8 uses!

I'm using Fuchs (Silkolene) 5W-40 in my K20 and it likes to lap it up too. 1L every at least 1500 miles. I haven't gauged it properly and I am suspect the 5-40 I sent to Honda on service day wasn't used. I'll be doing it myself this time so I will monitor usage properly.

Does seem to get to the bottom marker on the dip very quickly and I only do 14 miles per day.

Just feeding it petrol is fine, oil is a lubricant :p

Is it now? Thanks for the clarification! I just need to find out what the steering wheel does now and i'll be well away! :p

I think you'll find that if you "just" feed an engine petrol, things will eventually get very "sticky" ;)

Really? 3k miles since my last oil change and the level is still exactly the same as it was on day 1 and that engine gets worked really hard. Level was spot on when I dropped the old oil too, I've no idea how long it had been in though but I certainly never topped it up.

It could just need an oil change. Like you said its due a service, its possible the old oil has degraded slightly and thus using more. Get under it and drain the old oil and oil filter.

But what do you drive? My g/f car does not either but that is a 1.25 fez whereas my old 3.0 bm used a lot on 0-30w.

i'm using the 0-30 in my CTR as that's what the techs use when i have it serviced (don't provide my own oil)

Maybe i don't drive mine hard enough....only topped it up with 1/4 litre in 5k! :-/

You drive an utterly run of the mill 1.6 litre hatchback. It's unlikely to have any specific oil needs.

Honda VTECs use a bit of oil simply because it gets past the piston rings at higher engine speeds. Not surprising really as they rev to the moon. 25.7m/s from the S2000, that's as fast as an F1 engine.

certainly it is worth trying some bog standard 10w40. I reckon given the symptoms you would be better off trying this and replacing it every 5k rather than very thin performance oil at 10k intervals.

btw halfords do not usually have a very good value selection of motor oils.

The 0W-30 has no results yet though.

Hes complaining about high oil consumption on the 0W-40 Mobil 1. An oil known for a high NOACK volatility.

Just use the grade of oil stated in the treeware. By all means use fully synthetic, but make it the correct grade (if you can get fully synthetic in the grade you need).

I get a bit of oil usage, I dont Measure it, but its more than any other car i have owned, no leaks, and no performance loss.
H22A5 in a 1997 prelude.

I just do top ups every 5k and full changes at 10 :) (10-40 hellfrauds stuff)

Anyone know the volume between max and min on the dipstick for a H22A?

He specified 'an engine', my car has 'an engine'. I fail to see your point, you are just jealous because yours has unnacceptably high oil consumption ;)

I'm sure mine uses more than a litre to 1000 miles but it does take some hammer:p Next time I'll reset the trip counter and test it.
