Is 20Mb/s becoming 50Mb/s

Another 20mbit user who isn't in an over subscribed area.

The concensus over at cableforum is that the 50mb will be a seperate tier, costing around £50 per month, it will not be a free upgrade for 20mbit users.

768 up is fast. Don't forget adsl customers are still on 256, my first adsl broadband was 512 down!

Most are now on 488kbps, Max Premium does 832kbps, and Be do between 1.5Mbps and 2.5Mbps.
Of course, much-maligned ADSL/ADSL2+ doesn't have the same upstream limits as cable does, but DOCSIS3 should help there.

its always amusing when people dismiss the problems because their connection is fine. well, forums like cablehell wouldnt exist if everything was hunky dory.

ive had cable for a long time now - back when 1mb was £49.99 and for the most part, its been fine. however, i most certainly am not getting 20mb everytime i need it.

utter bull ****? open your eyes.

Conversly, it's always amusing when people dismiss the fact that not every UBR is over subscribed because their connection is problematic.

i never said they were. and i dont think anybody else did in this thread. however, a lot of people do have problems.

reminds me of an xbox360 thread. 'they are fine, my launch console still works' 'so does mine' 'mine too'.......

The problem I had is with someone stating that most users don't get the advertised speeds. Why don't you offer some evidence of the fact that a 'lot of people' have problems?

why should I have to? the evidence is out there if you look. wether its most, or a lot...i dont care. what im saying is that people are having problems. a lot of people on 20mb i know are, me included and like i said - ive stayed with ntl/virgin a lot longer than most people, so you can be sure im not saying it for fun.

Get off your stupidly high horse.

In this situation it IS stupid when someone comes along and says that virtually all of the VM customers have bad service.

This isn't true and if you believe that then well, you'll believe anything.

Oh and I didn't dismiss any issues, of course there are some - but when someone states that nearly all VM users have issues...I think YOU need to open your eyes.

So you've stayed with them longer than most? Good for you. I've been with them since they launched 512, does that make me special?

The fact is quite a few people get good speeds. All of my friends are on cable...and guess what? They get close to/they get the advertised speeds.

And again - if you open YOUR eyes and care to read properly, I didn't say "I get 20mb constantly" - I would say 95% of the time i get it and like I said, when it drops it'll go to about 15-17mb.

Also I love how when asked about evidence, you simply tell people to look. Usually if someone makes a claim like that they'll have information at hand.

Oh and yes I have seen forum posts about bad service...does that speak for every customer?

dont get your knicker in a twist, and i dont care how long youve been with them. i only used that to illustrate how long ive been with them and that i have had no problems for the most part. but when a lot of people i know, who arent all in my area i might add, are getting wildly fluctuating speed, and im talking 12mb or less here, ive been getting less than 6 on some nights. i dont download constantly eiither so it *shouldnt* be anything to do with the throttling.

are you capable of an adult discussion or are you going to throw your toys out of the pram every time somebody challanges you?

my issue is that like most people who like to justify their purchace/their provider/whatever they've paid for, is that they wont listen untill its laid out in from of them. if you can be bothered to search (doubt it given your stance here alread) you'll see ive happily done the research for any particular discussion ive taken part in. but this is something i just cant be bothered with.

Believe whatever you like but this is far from utter bull ****.

You're not willing to offer any evidence to justify what you are saying, but you expect everyone else to accept your point? Plus, getting angry doesn't lend you any credibility.

I really cannot be bothered any more. We can say we get good speeds...then someone will come along and cry about over subscribed areas and then go on to rubbish the whole company stating that the majority have issues...when they really don't :/

And of course I know there are issues...it's an ISP for Christ sake. It is a contended service, but it's a fairly good one at that. When I have issues I'll shout about them, but as I have already said my connection is fairly trouble fee and I know a lot of people who are in the same boat. Similarly I know people who have had bad connections.

I also know people who have had issues with Zen who are regarded to be the cream of the crop - but I wouldn't turn around and state that the majority of customers have issues :/

when the 20meg users very rarely get anything more than half that.

Utter bull ****. I get 20meg for the majority of the time.

When it does dip, which is quite rare it'll go to around 15-17mb.

So you see...I'm not dismissing anything. I fully acknowledge problems on the VM network - but to say that 20mb users rarely get it is indeed a false statement.

surely you rate it better than 'fairly good' or 'fairly trouble free'?

if somebody asks you for an honest opinion and you said 'well, its fairly trouble free' that wouldnt fill them with confidence?

angry? im sorry does it sound angry?

'It' (you) does.

The internet is full of people offering conjecture, speculation and generalisation. Where common sense prevails and you wish to challenge the opinion of a majority, it's up to you to offer some constructive evidence in support of your idea.

Have I said the service is perfect? Stop nit picking.

its not nit picking at all lol. either the service is great and so many people are wrong or its fairly good and a lot of people are having problems. it cant be both lol.

As ive said, i cant be bothered if you cant. and please, dont use the 'you need to show evidence' argument, it's there for peopel to see. search on here, on cablehell, cableforums. i have learnt that you cant change somebody's opinion unless they have had problems themselves. thats why this reminds me of the various xbox threads around - everything is splendid until your xbox fails.

One things for sure, despit the problems i have, id still stay with virgin over adsl. the adsl service in general pretty awful in this area lol.

Robert, maybe Alli isnt looking at the bigger picture here. maybe he is only basing his opinion on his area. is it possible you are too? you said that people will complain about oversubscribed areas....which is true, they will. i guess the question is, how many areas are over subscribed?

If you can't be bothered to justify your point then you shouldn't make it. Would you do that in real life?

Whoah! what a deathmatch this is turning into! :o

So we've all agreed that we disagree, meanwhile, none of this actually contributes to the concept of whether the 20mbit tier is going to morph into the 50mbit tier.

Personally, I think it will be another tier, at around £50pm. I wonder how many are going to have to upgrade their routers because that may well become the bottleneck for some. Not sure how many people realise that their router could be the cause of slow connections?
