Spec me some progressive rock?

get over yourself, how can YOU define what prog-rock is, or "Proper" Prog rock, people interperate what they think is prog, its not a look at how big my e-peen is im the god of prog-rock.

oh dear. Thats what trying to be helpful gets you on the forums. Back to silent membership it is then. I'd suggest you need a complex understanding of music to get to grips with this genre rather than a big a peen or whatever it is you have, seeing as the artists themselves are for the most part phenomenal musicians who are classically trained I think it is quite pertinent to try and interpret {interperate, nice} their music analytically and see it as a proper music form: ie. applying classical understanding of music to better understand their music.

Cant believe your command of english is so poor that you'd think I was giving or attempting to give a definitive list of prog. Rather, it is just a list of acclaimed progressive artists, who, for someone who might just not know much about the genre would find useful and accessible.

They're Folk rock.
You wouldn't believe how much stuff I've got of Tull

I know you're named after an Hawkwind track but I will never accept that they are prog.

Got loads of Tull myself, probably more than you, so there :p Stuff like Thick as A Brick and A Passion Play are progressive albums IMO, if you think different then thats up to you. Bands like Tull have gone through so many different styles of music it's easy just to label them with one, which is normally **** to the uninitiated, to others folk. Depends on how much you like a band I suppose.

Anyway, can I just say thanks. as your the first person who has ever realized what my user name originated from:D Everyone else seems to think I'm an Arsenal fan:confused:

This is my DVD collection of Tull:
Jethro Tull – 25th Anniversary
Jethro Tull – Isle Of Wight 1970
Jethro Tull – Live 77 and 78
Jethro Tull – Live At Montreux
Jethro Tull - Living With The Past
Jethro Tull – Lugano 2005
Jethro Tull - Slipstream

and of course I have every album.

Just remembered what we used to label Hawkwind as : Space Rock.

Personally, I don't really think of Rush as prog rock, more a brilliant rock band.;)

Marillion deserve another mention, Script is a brilliant album, with Fugazi not far behind.

What does being modern have to do with it? And what do you mean by 'metallic'?

Absolutely nothing. Just to give a timeline of the music. Earlier doesn't = better necessarily, but as technology and other factors change, so does the music and the style. I'm really beginning to regret this post now as it seems to be better to just give a list with no reasoning or specifics like:

Tool
King Crimson
ELP
Yes

you get my point....

"Metallic" ok, well seeing as this is a subjective theme amongst listeners, everyone will have something different to say. For example some of the massive riffs in Tool, I dunno, like Cold & Ugly or something else, seem to have a hard edge to them no? Instruments used + efx and lyrics combined give a harder edge which I decided to use a more specific word for: 'Metallic' Im sure, however Meshuggah, Opeth , Soilwork etc fans would not appreciate this word quite so much. Just there for arguments' sake. "Hard" and "Heavy" can mean almost anything I think. In this case the word "metallic" is used by the regretful author to denote a more aggressive undertone within the music and a much louder sound to boot.

If you would like I can give more specific examples, answers and exact riff times and song titles: requiring a big time investment on my part and a lengthy post.

If there are any more complaints about my original post I will ask a Mod to remove it and I will leave it with just a list of names rather than dare attempt to help someone else.

LOL OK you win:o I was only being light hearted, if this is what it's like in here all the time no wonder I don't post much.

Have you got the original newspaper that came with Thick As A Brick? Me neither:mad: IMO some Tull albums are Prog, your opinion is different. The OP was asking for some suggestions, not an argument. I gave mine and you gave yours.

:)

Bloody hell, you took that the wrong way.
I was only showing you my Tull collection - I wish I hadn't bothered :(
And yes, I have the paper somewhere in the attic.

Genres aren't really open for debate because people and their experiences will label them how they see them.
I grew up with all the old bands and thats my personal call, you can call them what you like and you'll be right.

Wiki's view of what prog rock is
Musical characteristics

Form: Progressive rock songs either avoid common popular music song structures of verse-chorus-bridge, or blur the formal distinctions by extending sections or inserting musical interludes, often with exaggerated dynamics to heighten contrast between sections. Classical forms are often inserted or substituted, sometimes yielding entire suites, building on the traditional medleys of earlier rock bands. Progressive rock songs also often have extended instrumental passages, marrying the classical solo tradition with the improvisational traditions of jazz and psychedelic rock. All of these tend to add length to progressive rock songs, which may last longer than twenty minutes.

Might as well as say any album that is a concept one is prog rock? Warrior on the edge of time,Chronicles of the black sword, iRobot, Court of the Crimson King, Passion Play, etc.

Edit: Sorry thought you was being a bit of an arse :( Glad you did bother though, now I know what to ask for for my birthday :D

I'm not a bit of an arse, I'm a massive arse.
Jethro Tull - Living With The Past DVD is a must buy.
You can now get it with Nothing Is Easy from Isle Of Wight 1970 so is a bargain.

And don't forget to try early Spocks Beard with Neil Morse - I'll guarantee you'll love them.

What a thread, never thought I would hear of "Spocks beard" spoke of here, to see so many YES lovers ( At Uni I used to play the Yes Album every Sunday all day and love it ) and to top it off more evidence that there is no bass line on Justice for all! prog rock = YES earlier the madder!
KJ

Spocks beard suck now, IT all went down hill when that moose guy found god and got in bed with the fat one from dream theatre

it's prog fans like you who are the reason everyone hates prog fans. Genre definition is just as personal as a like or dislike of particular music. As Neoni said, one individual cannot be the authority on the definition of prog, so don't kid yourself into thinking your opinion counts to anyone but you (though eloquent and justified, you may be).

Tool. Fantastic I think, but I see them as metal first and foremost.

that's the problem - you see them as metal. I don't. Who's right? The person who trawls discographies trying to define prog (what were you listening for during these discography trawlings, by the way?), or the music fan who hears something he's not heard before in a track or album and thinks "hmm, not heard that before - progressive?"

you need musical knowledge to really understand prog rock people. hoho.

No, when I was a lad you needed a brown corduroy jacket with leather patches on the elbows like Geography teachers had and a beard.
When I was a boy it was all the snobs who listened to it.
