Killed 7900GS; Replacement Suggestions Please

Wow, thanks for all the responses guys, plenty of food for thought :)

I find myself now torn between a 3850 Pro, and a 9600GT (neither of which were in my original line up). They seem to offer pretty much the same performance...

Can anyone advise on a particularly quiet running version of either these cards? Powercolor's 3850 looks pretty good, but I'm not quite sure I trust it to have dynamic fan speed and actually slow down in 2D (my old card did not, hence I was trying to fit a new cooler in the first place!)

Thanks!

Eddie

I would personally go for the 9600GT over the 3850 if they are the same price as the 9600GT is faster in most games especially with AA &AF on

No, those powercolor cards with that fan do not slow down, they are actually quite loud.

You'd be better off with the OCUK value one, or one with a normal stock cooler tbh.

Dammit - I'd read the same about the gigabyte 8800GT's with the zalman cooler too... what's the point if they don't make them dynamic speed? Or am I missing the point of a big cooler...? ¬_¬

Yeah, the benchmarks seem to support that, although I can't find a 9600 for quite the same £102 mark, and it feels a bit silly to pay £117 for a 9600 when £140 gets a good brand 8800GT. 38% saving feels good, 17% less so >_<

There's times in life when it feels like less choice would be an advantage :/

All fair points - but it's my understanding that OCUK value products are pretty much random in what model you'll get. With a specific requirement for a quiet PC, I can't really take a gamble on getting a noisy beasty :/

May have to forgo a couple of pub trips and save that extra £30 :)

That's true about the OCUK value products, also you may not get all the extra cables etc.

You definately do mate! Its just a random manufacturer, like i believe for ATi just now its Triplex! You get a full retail pack as standard just not sure who you will get as a manufacturer

Gibbo has clarified that OCUK value 8800GTs can be ECS/Palit/Xpert Vision/Zotac.

All are fine and there was no report of noisy fans on any particular brand. But if you're very lucky you'll get the ECS with Accelero S1, otherwise the Zotac is good also with the revised reference single slot cooler with bigger fan.

Have a look at this thread and you'll get an idea what card you might be getting.
