thankyou m8y :)
i was referring to the little review tab next to the product description on the oc/uk site, but this works for me.

One thing you should note. If you want to switch between E-SATA and USB you need to open up the unit each time to switch over the SATA connector to the other header on the board - this is very annoying, lots of other caddies have a switch to change between interfaces. e-SATA doesnt work with IDE drives by the way!

yeah im more concerned with the external side of things.

i plan to put a 500 or maybe 750gb sata drive in it, and have no plans to swap to another type.

the reason for the post was i wanted to be sure, before spending the £35 that A/ it had the correct external port and B/ it had everything i would need to connect it to my e-sata port built into my asus p5ke mobo.

there seems to be plenty that you can put a sata drive inside, but they all seem to be usb or maybe firewire when it comes to actually connecting to the pc.

I have the Icy Box in your link, use it with a 400GB Seagate 7200.10 SATA HDD, connected vis USB2, it certainly does work well, the only issue I have with it (as already mentioned), is, to change interfaces from USB to eSATA you have to open it up and change a connector, however with This one, you don't have to, as their is an external switch to do it. :)

A slight warning for you. I also have a P5K-E, and the E-Sata ports on the board are not controlled by the intel controller, instead a crappy JMicron controller which some kid in taiwan host their website on his ISDN line.

I have a 2.5" icybox drive connected to my JMicron E-sata and have had LOTS of problems with it. If I unplugged it (hotswap), then plugged it back in again it would take a long time to detect it, or read anything from it - as if it were only getting 0.1MB/s.

I solved the problem with a driver update. However, my friend has a abit IP35 pro (has same Jmicron controller), and this update just cause his PC to BSOD when trying to copy stuff to my external drive. USB worked though, thankfully.

Just make sure you get the latest driver, and, try hotswapping it a few times before you put all your important data, just to make sure it works correctly (I had to use a program to recover all my files!).

EEK ! ISDN you say... hmmm i wonder if he will buy my realmagic card from me !

ok, good info - its exactly the kind of info i would like to know about before slapping 35 sheets down.

thankyou very much for the replies.

I have one of those icyboxes that u mention in your 1st post. I will warn you that the product is not as attractive in real life as that picture makes out. In fact it feels quite cheap and nasty to me. Also, be careful with the SATA connector on the board of the icybox. Mine was supplied with a SATA cable to connect the drive to the board in the icybox that was unnessecarily long. This means u have to bend the cable over in the enclosure... this puts stress on the sata connector on the board. I was quite heavy handed and ripped the plastic runner for the SATA connector off. Fortunately all the pins were still intact. So be gentle :)

It does the job for me... but i cant help but think there surely must be better enclosures out there.

i have just bought one of these but having problems getting XP to see the drive.

Call me stupid, but does the SATA drive have to be formatted first?

No it doesn't. Have you gone in to Administrative tools -> computer management and assigned a drive letter?

The only problem I had with a similar IcyBox to that model was the very temperamental SATA connector on the internal circuit board. The slightest movement of the socket could mean the drive powering on or off depending on its position.

XP can't even install it. The 'found new hardware' wizard just says it can't install it and XP doesn't show it in disk management.

On my vista laptop i can see it fine though. Any ideas?
