Right guys!

The poll is created and we are now living in the newly refurbed Music, Literature and Box Office sub forum!

Vote away on what you wish to read this month, the poll will close on friday the 28th, and we'll begin on the following monday (allowing people the weekend to go buy the winning book if they do not already own it!)

A month is far too long for a book if you ask me. Interest will wane if you have it that long, although it would suit me as I'd be able to read another couple of books in between.

Added a poll from the books in the OP. I'm going to think further about how choice for the book to read needs to work moving forward. Everyone suggesting their own won't work, there's far too many to choose from.

I've allowed multiple votes so people can have more than one choice. No point limiting it if people aren't too fussed about 2 or 3 from the choice.

I chose the top two. Don't like Catch 22 but enjoyed Moby Dick and Space Odyssey

Thanks for this Gilly much appreciated.

I think a month is too long for a book myself, but then not everyone is the same speed at reading.

How about we stick to one or two people picking the books for the month? I choose the books at random this month (aside from 2001:ASO, Seemed fitting) so that we would have a good spread.

How does everyone feel about myself putting a list of five books up each time choosen from different genres? Would make it a lot easier to decide I think - but I will still take on board peoples suggestions, and if I hear a certain book or author a few times I will make that an option.

tbh I think a month is long enough, I and I'm sure others have reading to do for course work etc.. But if you want it quicker then I'm sure Ill manage!

It's not a case of me "wanting" it faster - I just want to get a good balance of reading vs time.

Sounds like you're making me into a dictator of books! haha!

I'm sure it is long enough, I was meaning it was too long, but people don't have to keep up. If for any reason someone drops behind they can always miss a book, it's not like that'll be frowned on! There's no homework!

Exactly! It's a bit of fun!

What would you think would be an acceptable amount of time in your eyes, Gilly?

Rich

A fortnight would suit me, but it sounds like that would be short for some. Three weeks?

Think I agree with you on the fortnight, but it sounds like you and me both are fast readers - three weeks sounds good to me.

Rich

An laternative would be to have two books in a month so if people want to read two they can or if people are slow they can pick one of them and still participate.

what say we first highlight genres first and three options per genre. then just poll each book per genre on a rotating basis.

e.g.

week
1 - fiction
2 -scifi/fantasy
3 - bbc list
4 - readers choice

You've missed out history, which can easily be divided up into ancient and modern. My own personal preference with books is military (WWII), which I feel will open the eyes of quite a few who wouldn't normally read such books.

First choice would be Berlin by Antony Beevor.

we can have history or subgenres (i like ancient myself) as the different genre of choice :)

Cutesy cartoon did you not watch it?! :p I agree it is a fantastic book though.

Also, Book club seems a really good idea. Would like to be a part. Reading Labrinth by Kate Mosse. its really good.

OMG fabulous book!! Totally hooked, all the way through it. Gonna grab sepulchre(?! - think it's that) next.

I'm a fast reader too, but also have exams coming up soon so think a month is good, after may/june make it 2/3 weeks!

Just noticed ClearblueSkies thread and made me smile - shame it got locked as CBS is the kind of guy I saw my book club inviting!

I'll let you talk about book club! (as long as you long as you bring me helena bonham carter ala fight club - oof!)

Rich

Suppose it would depend on the size of the book as well as obviously people aren't going to be able to read "The Lord of the Rings" in the same length of time as say "To Kill a Mockingbird" so it would probably be best to decide time on a book by book basis rather than apply the same time-frame to various to both door stops and pamphlets.

apart from the previously mentioned To kill a mockingbird (which I tend to reread every few years), may I suggest Truman Capotes In Cold Blood, or T H Whites The Once and Future King both excellent landmark books.
