Rio Ferdinand - England captain

FFS why all the moaning - he's one of the few players in the squad who, on current form, deserves a starting place.

Whoever was selected, there would be complaints - Terry (comments as above), Rooney (inexperienced perhaps, firebrand nature, penchant for middle aged whores), Owen (form not enough to guarantee place), Beckham (no longer up to international scratch), Lampard / Gerrard (who starts, can they play together blah blah) etc etc.

He's the best choice, and although I thoroughly hate Man United, and it pains me to say it, he's a class act.

**spit**

First Cheets the other night now Sandy, WTF is going on

I'd give him a shot, dont think he's got the minerals or the presence though. Interesting to see, hes not a man that shys down easily.

There's no doubting that Ferdinand is a great defender (ive said many times that he's the best in the world) but i really don't think he's captain material.

For a start there is all his off-field antics and although he's cut a lot of the silly mistakes out of his game, he's still prone to the odd ****-up.

You don't think he shies down but you don't think he has the minerals? :/

He's got the beans as someone said earlier hes captained MU a fair few times this season and done a good job, give him a bash if hes cack give it back to Terry or Gerrard

If he didn't play for United there wouldn't be much of an argument. He deserves a chance and it won't hurt for one game.

Defenders don't need to play the ball. They need to defend.

Being able to play the ball is nice, but stopping goals is the first priority. Terry is best at this.

I must admit you confuse the hell out of me at times Gilly. A couple of years ago you was going on about Ashley Cole being the best Left Back in the world because of his ability to go forward and his defending was secondary. Now because it's Rio it changes to being able to defend first and foremost.

Saying that defenders don't need to play the ball sums up the problems in English football today sadly

I think trying a few players out in the role is a good idea as it will give FC a chance to see who he thinks is best in a match situation.
Obviously I hope Terry will get it long term as I've seen the effect he has on his teammates week in week out more than I've seen the other candidates plus if they feel they're on trial they should raise their game accordingly which is never a bad thing:)

At last some common sense

Im not agreeing with what Gilly has said about Ferdinand but there is a huge difference between a CB and a LB in terms of which aspect of their game is more important.

Although LB's or RB's do need to be able to defend there have been a few in recent history that have been regarded as the best in their posisition without being that good defensively (Roberto Carlos for example), i don't think the same can be said for a CB.

yes but rio ferdinand is good defensively. and if i think back to my favourite cb's of all time they tend to be ball players.
