L glass is much happier on xxD than xxxD !

Please let me know what the out come is of the next test as you never know i might want to upgrade my camera soon if the focus and speed and saturation are better.

Saturation can be altered in the camera settings or image editor.

Focus speed on the 40D is faster than any xxxD and previous xxD

Ok I didn't manage to do any testing today, will retry tomorrow! I just wanted to confirm one thing though, can you guys confirm if this is acceptable sharpness for 200mm 2.8 with IS?

http://robbiekhan.co.uk/root/photos/camera/70-200K/200mm_is_mode1.jpg

I will get some more samples up later.

I think I may have found an issue where sometimes with IS enabled images come out soft but will have to confirm this with some more testing at each labelled focal length in about an hour!

Yup it looks okay.

Don't spend hours taking test photos of chairs etc and analysing every pixel - so long as it looks good after a couple of test shots then leave it at that!
It's all too easy to get fixated with pixel peeping and testing the lens using every setting.

for a lens costing a few hundred aye but spending £1200 on one you tend to get a bit jumpy about /everything/ hehe!

I'm a D200 user but have handled the 400D and 40D a fair bit... I actually laugh every time I pick up a 350/400D, but the 40D is much better.

I guess in all fairness it's only on full view where you can notice some softness if an image does come out soft - normal sizes and prints won't be affected!

Ok I cannot let this go out of my mind hehe.

I just phoned up the shop I got it and they are sending me a new one and collecting this one tomorrow morning (swap basically) and the reason is the below.

Check this out, the lens is defo encountering a focusing problem half the time, 2 identical shots with same shoot settings (flash, iso200, 1/200s, centre AF point) and same AF point selected for both (the silver DELL badge). I also allowed the IS to level out before taking the shot so completely steady.

Notice where the focus ended up for both shots, the first shows the Dell badge nicely in focus whilst the 2nd shows the edge of the laptop lid in focus so it's back/forward-focusing half the time?

Correct AF point focus:

AF point not in focus:

Oneshot, same parameters for both aye.

I actually managed to have a play on the 40D at another shop this afternoon and managed to see the same results - a longer play this time of course than in the OP short play :)

Will report back tomorrow when the new one arrives because I think I can hang onto the 350D a bit longer now!

Don't be mean :p

I gave my sister my old 300D and I was playing around with it the other week, and despite it's age (in digital terms) it's still a hell of a camera. I don't know about the 350, but that did look a bit off to me. Spec wise, the 400D seems like a great camera. If I'd waited a couple of years the 400D would have been great to start with.

I do prefer my 30D though :)

He's not trying to be mean. I owned a 20D 30D about to upgrade to a 40D (have handled one) and I own a 350D.. It makes me cry every time I have to handle the 350D due to its poorer build quality.

I really cringe every time I change from my 1D Mkii to the 30D. It's the BQ and the overall speed and responsiveness that I dislike now :(

I was just about to post that!

So, in short the methodology used in the OP is wrong. Seriously, if you're upgrading hoping to get better IQ you may be disappointed. If on the other hand you're upgrading for more FPS, better build quality, high ISO performance and overall speed you'll be quite pleased.

Yup already established several posts ago it's for the built quality and performance gains :)

Well the new one came this morning and it "feels" diffferent to the other one? the hood fits on tighter, the lens cap attaches tighter and the zoom ring is a bit stiffer and there is no more odd noise when moving the focus ring (thought this was normal before due to the IS modes) - almost as if the other was was used by someone for a bit then returned and resold (or refurbed) ?

Anyway, this one is sharper thankfully :D I'm going to stop pixel peeping anow and hope for decent weather to actually be out using it!

Glad you got it sorted Robbie. You really have put me in the mood to replace my 70-200/4 L for it :) How where is my bank robbing clothes :P
