WD Caviar SE16 640GB 16MB (WD6400AAKS) £70.49 inc VAT

They have a two year longer warranty than the regulars, so not a gimmick in my opinion if you want the extra peace of mind for little/no extra cost!

apparently this is 2 drives in raid

I have the 320gb version(have now for 2 months)

At certain times it makes awful screeching noises(and no it's not because its reading data :P). Not sure if it's ready to pack in.

It is however dead silent when the noise does not occur.

surely theyve not been out 2 months, even in usa, looking on various forums, maybe 2-3 weeks

They NEED to make a 1TB version of these drives sharpish!

WD are promoting their GreenPower range hugely at the moment so they're not as interested in making a performance 1TB drive yet.

Slackworth: Are there plenty of these drives left in stock? I want to order 2 today and need them by tomorrow :D

Got plenty :D

christ, tempted to sell my raptors and get two of these instead

-edit, are the RE2 drives just a sales gimmick?

The RE2 drive isn't a sales gimmick at all. If you have your computer on 24/7 and intend on keeping the drives for a longer period then the warranty has the extra two years. If your computer is off for a lot of the time and you'll sell the drives in 6 months time then yes it's a bit pointless. We just offer both.

Is it definitely a single platter drive as they haven't given the 320GB a new code for the single platter. It's just a different revision number.

It definitely shouldn't be making screeching noises. Try running the WD Diagnostic Tool to see if it picks anything up.

Are these drives better than the Samsung F1's (320GB) or the single platter 320Gb AAKSs?

Thanks :)

I reckon they should certainly be as good as.

My old Asus P4C800-E motherboard is only SATA "1" and still allows me to use my SATA "II" hard drive without the use of a jumper to limit the speed to 150MB/s :S
