Hey

I've read some threads here about uni halls and I know a lot of people are currently living at some. I'm going into my 3rd year at University this year after 2 years at college and I live about 30 minutes away from home. However I hate traveling up every morning and I have been thinking of moving out.

Are there any people who live in halls as close to the university as I am and is it stupid to stay at the halls when I could just travel up every morning. My friends aren't going to the same university, and some of them are working so I probably wouldn't know who I would be living with.

Thanks

Even if i lived 15 minutes away from Halls, i'd want to get the full 'University experience' and stay in Halls but that's just the type of person i am. :)

My wife did this, got fed up with a 40 minute bus/tube ride in and moved into hall for her final two years, she loved it.

I've stayed at home throughout Uni. 30-40 minute drive.

However I'm often only at uni for 1/2 hours a day for 2/3 times a week so it has never made sense to stay there.

Well I live about 20 mins tube travel from my uni. But that's 30 mins in total from getting to the station and out the other station to the required destination.

I live at home and i'm a first year uni student. I don't mind the travel. It cuts down rent costs for me. It means I can enjoy myself and not worry about being tight for money. Timing issues about what time I get home isn't an issue. I get my own space etc.
But in all honesty, thurs-sun I crash at my mate's accomodation. I pay toward the food costs upon mutal agreement. I'm only ever home mon-weds and even then that's rare. Only when I need to pick stuff up.

What i'm trying to say is if you are going to move out and can't stand travelling move out with someone, it'll be much easier.

Thanks for the responses :)

It probably takes me about 30-40 minutes traveling, including walking to the train station. I just hope I get in even though I live quite close, obviously the people who live far away will get priority but I'm still 19 and this is technically my first year at University (the course is sort of linked to my college, as this is the degree year). I can only try though, thanks again.

I live 15 miles away 25 mins from home, I've lived at uni all three years and if I had the choice I'd do the same again, your only there once, make the most of it. :)

Enjoy

uni halls are great, especially catered ones if your shy, forces you to go down and mix with people at dinner :)

Meet some great people in halls now a bunch of us are looking for a house together :D

Bit late for that in your final year though. If it was first year then sure as you'll have a year of getting totally ****ed and having a laugh but it just doesnt seem to happen as much in the final year, negating much of the fun point of halls...

.... but only for you, everyone else will be running around, getitng wrecked, playing loud music and staggering around making toast at 4am becuase they will be 1st and 2nd years. All whilst you are cramming for final year exams.

Most people I know have got into a shared house with others on their course by the final year meaning everyone you live with has the same mindset. My GF is in halls however and it's often a real pain - lots of noise from people who are at a more carefree stage in their Uni life.

Have you got the opportunity to move in with course mates? If so, it'll probably be just fine and I'd recommend it. But generic halls? I'd give it a miss.

I'd agree with [TW]Fox, if you want to move into halls then 1st year or even possibly 2nd year is the best time for it, however it could still be ok in your final year but I'd have to think a lot more carefully about it if it were me in that situation.

I'm sending my accommodation application tomorrow. I already have a conditional offer from the University and I should be getting an interview soon. I just hope that my application is early enough and that I'll get accepted :)

I have to say thanks to everyone, been a great help :)

Okay... I'm sorry I keep bumping this topic and I'll leave it be soon :p

When should I be applying for accommodation? Do I wait until I get an offer from the University or should I be doing it when I am applying?
