Today on UKTV people there has been a show called bait car. Basiclly the police leave a car somewhere with a high car crime rate and wait for it to be stolen, then remotely shut down the car.

The car also contains GPS tracking and CCTV equipment.

My question is this, it seems like an easy and cheap way to catch and reduce car crime and as the show shows they also witness lots of other crimes whilst at it.

Why is it not done widely over here, I can't think of a negative spect of it. Heck I would do that job.:p

Entrapment is illegal afaik.

edit: no it's not :p

from wiki:

"In deciding whether to grant a stay, the Court will consider, as a useful guide, whether the police did more than present the defendant with an unexceptional opportunity to commit a crime."

Quite often these shows have cars which are unlocked with the keys in, which wouldn't hold up in court, as it would be an exceptional opportunity.

Yeah or leave them unlocked. Its a shame that these would not hold up in court because they are still stealing the car and so hould be punished.

Yes not really entrapment. It would be if the police phoned up the criminal and told him the car was their or asked him to steal it to order for them (obviously posing as a shady car/parts dealer). However, essentially all they are doing is filming a car they have dumped in the street.

Because stealing a car isn't illegal if it's easy.

It'll only be worth it if they are wired to incinerate/microwave/implode the occupants upon entry or via remote.

Some people might want to do a little reading on UK Entrapment Laws.
You should find that unlike our "friends" in the US there are very few laws on entrapment in the UK.

The main test in the UK is "incitement". If the keys are in the car and the thief goes off with it, he has no defence. If (say) a police officer (in plain clothes of course) hands him the keys and says: "hey, that car owner left these behind" then the thief would probably get off. But yes, yet again everyone seems to get their knowledge of the law from watching American cop shows.
