Well am sat here now just finally with a clear head of thinking after what has been a crazy week on the car front. Just 6 days ago I had a lovely Pug 106 nothing fancy. It was my real first car (I had 2 cars before but one got wrote off after 5 days and the other was broke into shortly after getting it. So I had this:

A 1.1 that has just scraped through its test, nice car but had a few things about to go wrong with it. So I decided to sell it and get something a little bigger (as spoke about here...here.

I had my mum and dad looking for something and came across a 206 1.6 GLX:

Looked like a really nice car, took it for a test drive, everything felt good. Nice owners a young couple. They were honest enough to tell me that it had failed its MOT on the front break discs which they then replaced and it passed. My dad was happy with it and I paid £1150 for it which with the features it had and that it had only do 65k I was chuffed to bits. Fast forward to a couple of days to yesterday and I get a knock on the door. A neighbour was there saying I might want to come look at my car. Huge oil leak - woooo I thought, looks like I got a ringer. So took it to a local motosave to where someone I know works. Up on the ramps it goes to find that this car has been in shall we say a little prang. The whole front end had been replaced. He said it was unsafe to drive and that I should get shut ASAP. Again great I thought. What had caused the oil leak was that the oil filter had corroded away.

So I get in the car to find the AC and Heaters have blown. To add to my misery The rear windscreen heater had blown too. My mum and dad said that the car was to be sold straight away. But I could never sell this car privately just because I know it could kill someone one day.

So my mum offered to put some money towards a part ex at a dealer as an early birthday present (21st in July) so I said sounds good.

What I've been looking at is a 1.2 16v Corsa Club, 53 reg with 25000 miles in silver. They offered my it at £2250 including my old car, which they offered my £1750 for which is a great price for a scrap bucket. Plus I know its going somewhere where it can be properly looked at and not to another unsuspecting person like myself. So It looks like alls well that ends well and hopefully I can get the Corsa. What do you think the Corsa good but or what. Also I think i'm gonna have a problem in regards to not having the log book, rang the people who I bought the 206 from and they said they have sent it off last week, the DVLA haven't recieved anything yet. What chance do I have of the dealer taking the car?

Thanks for reading. Needed to get it off my chest.

Doors look a different shade on that 206 for starters, learn your lesson and move on, weve all bought lemons in our lifetime:p

So you P/X it at a dealership, who will sell it to some unsuspecting buyer, whom it could kill one day?

I thought this too. If the car is as bad as you make it out to be I'd actually scrap it, and buy a small cheap car that is more likely to actually work than the 206.

I've never been able to tell if a car has been ringed by the amount of oil it's leaking...

Log book may take a few weeks to process, but as you will have the new owners slip this shouldn't be a problem for the garage.

I would think it is illegal to sell a car in that condition unless you tell the purchaser.
Technically the car is evidence and you should get the police onto it.

Take that back to the people you bought it from. An MOT centre would surely have noticed the front damage, so they were lying? Is there no way to claim the money back since they sold you something which was not fit for purpose?

Evidence of what exactly? Selling a car which has been crashed and then repaired wasn't a crime last I knew.

I agree, it could come back and bite you in the arse one way or another, best to get rid of it safely / notify trading standards and see if anything can be done, etc

The doors of the 206 are quite obviously a different colour to the rest of the car. I doubt it's just a photography faux pas either as the colour change is significant right along the entire gap.

Didn't you notice that when buying it?

Also, a dealer is unlikely to inspect a PX car unless they are putting it on their own forecourt, they'll probably cart it straight off to auction to be sold to another unsuspecting buyer.

The picture is just off my phone, the focus across the road is red. But then again the first picture was taking off the same phone. Weird.

If you are happy with the price of the Corsa you've effectively made £600 on the 206 in a matter of days. Thats quite a return on your cash :p

But it means he's paid £4k for a 4 year old base model Corsa!

The OP sounds like a lesson in how not to buy cars. Now he's ended up in a Corsa :(

If the seller of the 206 said it hadn't been in a crash or you asked and they denied it, you could sue them.

You'd have to prove it as well of course.

To restore karma that car should be backed to whoever stitched you up with it not sold on without telling the new buyer that you have been told it is not road worthy.
I'd get a 2nd opinion on the motor first thing in the morning. If he says the same then I'd ring the bloke you bought it off & give him 2 choices, Cash back or you ring the law, Simple as that.
The Law is on your side & peoples lives are at stake if that car is not road worthy.
Next time take somebody with Actual experience when you look at a car, Live & learn & all that :)

How does an oil leak lead you to conclude that your car has a bogus identity

"Nurse, this man has a scratch on his arm. That'll be the Big C!"

Also, repairing a damaged car is not illegal. Replacing a whole "front end" (whatever that may entail) is also not illegal.
