Peugeot 306, Whats the catch (First car idea)

Hmm,

Just had a wander around autotrader and the various insurance sites etc.

Now as followers of my previous thread probably know, I'm looking for a runabout next month (or two). For the £500-£1k mark AND has to be good on the old insurance. (As people will know my insurance quotes are god damn AWFULL at the best of times).

Anyway, I was looking at getting a corsa, but then I was just looking around seeing if I could get a slightly higher spec one. Wasn't really happening, So I simply searched for hatchbacks with aircon and up popped Peugeot 306 Meridian 1.4. Now it seems perfect little run about for the next 1-2years until I get around to getting my focus (well that's the plan for now at least). What draws me too it is I find it more attractive than a Corsa, near as makes no difference same price per millage. Except the 306 has a lot more bells and whistles (aircon particularly). Performance Seems about the same between the 1.4 306 and 1.2 Corsa (on paper atleast). Oh and 5dr 306's are much much more common (therefore easier) to come across. (Obviously you can still get a 5dr corsa but it just bit harder to find a good deal since the second hand market around here seems to be mostly 3dr's.

And best bit is it's only marginally more expensive to insure than the Corsa. So, whats the catch? Yes its french but if I was to pick up one with say 80k miles and FSH I can't imagine with my little millage (circa 3k a year) for 2 years isn't going to cause it too many problems?

Oh and please before this turns into a debate about a) The cost of my insurance and b) How fiesta 1.25's are better can I remind people to stay on topic. This is corsa vs 306 only. ;) (Although ideas on little hatchbacks that are similarly spec'ed as the 306 in question is welcome).

The catch here is that its a heavy car with a lethargic and wheezy 1.4l engine, an interior designed in the early 90's, and as such will rattle itself to death. That and the electrics aren't much cop either.

This isn't to say the 306 is a bad car, but the 1.4 is a bad engine choice in it. I'd opt for the 1.9TD (given that its only GRP7 insurance IIRC?), as that way, you have at least got mechanical reliability even if the interior and electrics try to implode.

I chose the 1.4 because it's group 4. Anything higher and it just isn't viable to insure. I'll give the D a quick quote to see what it comes out at but I'm fairly sure it'll be around the £2,500 mark which is too much I'm afraid!

I don't mind the engine being asthmatic (hay it'd make 2 of us!) but the electrics worry be some what, possible to expand on that? And rattling is far from ideal but atleast it dosen't cost anything!

But given the Corsa as the only viable alternative what do you reckon?

Sorry, I was wrong anyway, the 1.9TD is group 5.

As for the electrics, they are just typical french 90's electrics. Windows/mirrors etc may stop working, I've seen issues with indicator stalks, etc.

Group 5. Ah in that case we might be in business. I'll run a quote through in a second. Oh, Just saw Turbo diesels on autotrader in the same price bracket. Obviously have to run a quote first but if it comes out reasonable any harm in getting a turbo one?

I assume with it being a Diesel I can get away with being slightly more laid back with the millage. 100k on the clock not too much of a concern etc?

Thanks again.

Alec

Totally, I'm eyeing up a new indicator stalk on Ebay right this moment :)

The diesels are bullet proof though, will do 60mph in 10 seconds, return 46mpg and can be serviced every 6k miles for about £15. Really are cheap as chips!

The other good thing is there are always loads down the scrap yards so getting second hand parts is never an issue.

Most of them will do 200k Alllec, long as they've been serviced on time.

Are you sure you arent looking at the DTurbo, it will be a little bit worse on insurance that the 306TD

Either of the Dturbo or the TD are great cars, french diesels are great, I wouldnt worry that much about the electrics, ive not really seen any huge problems...

The rattling isnt that bad... im sure the corsa would also rattle!

getting a corsa over a 306 would be silly IMO even the slow 1.4 306 is going to have a nicer ride, better driving position and more toys than the little corsa

also it depends on how much you want to spend on the car itself, you may be able to afford a 306 HDi?

*edit*

5dr 306 TD LX just came out at £2,300.
5dr 306 DTurbo just came out at £2,300.

Whats better? DTurbo or TD?

Really glad to hear all this stuff, only *slight* concern is it seems quite a bit harder to find a 5dr aircon turbo diesel.

So, let's say crunch time comes and I need to buy a car, even if I can't get the Turbo D the normal 1.4 306 still > Corsa yeah?

OH and HDi is out of my price range - Especially since this car is just a stop gap more than anything :)

Thanks again guys

3dr 306 DTurbo just came out at £2,100.

Will run through a 5dr Turbo Diesel in a second.

Noticed your pricerange after... so no HDi

5 Door Dturbos are rare as hell! (a lot of people on autotrader may call their TD a DTurbo...)

What are you doing to get qoutes that high!?
you must be 17 with points and accidents?

Im 19 and insure a 2002 106 GTi fully comp for £1200 and thats with an accident which was my fault.

The 1.4 isn't too bad in the 306/Xsara. It's an 8v unit so whilst its not terribly powerful it pulls quite well from low revs. It'll be fine as a first car.

The TD is quicker but around town the petrol is nicer to drive because its smoother and quieter with a lighter clutch.

The DTurbo I got a quote on actually came up as a proper D Turbo and the TDLX came up as a TDLX so those quotes are genuine :)

And I'm 17, no points or anything (still haven't actually passed just yet! :o) And live in a CRAP postcode. And these are, of course, TPFT.

DTurbo is still group 5. Well mine was.

Owned it for a couple of years, and have driven 1.4 and 1.6s as well. The 1.4 is ... slow. 1.6 is fine, TD is fun and frugal.

Indicator stalks - LOL. Mine melted internally and got stuck indicating right. Lucky it was under warranty.

Yeah I thought your qoutes were correct its just that the few 5 door "dturbo's" were probably just DT's? possibly not but i know 5 door dturbs are rare, or at least they were when I had my HDi.

Ah that will be why then, never knew postcodes made that much difference, <3 mine though :D chavs around here would probably knock themselves out and inadvertantly dial 999 on their phone as they fall over trying to break into a car :o

Just to put things in prespective these are my quotes. (And there exactly the same direct to the insurer (eCar)). And yes I've checked around EVERYWHERE and eCar are the cheapest :)

* Think there all '98 but could be wrong, the 306 Diesels might be a little older.

why go french, whats wrong with a fiesta?

The fact I find them the ugliest car around. And the fact the insurance is £2443.35. (For 1.25 5dr LX) (Wouldn't pay more than £1.6k for a car I don't like the look and feel of). :o ;)

how desperate can someone be for a car to start looking at vauxhalls?

Erm, As desperate as me?

Yeah valid point, May have just been the first DTurbo I clicked on was genuine! Thanks for your help bud.

So to to sum up basically I should be looking to get 5dr DTurbo, if not 5dr TDLX, if not 5dr 1.4 and finally if not Corsa. That sound fair enough? Or is the TDLX better than the DTurbo? If there's any difference at all!?
