Banksy

I don't like all of his stuff but I really like the animal ones he does. Might possibly get one of his ratties as my first tattoo.

Love it :)

He has never really been granted 'permission'

Not strictly true, a lot of his larger outdoor stencils are commissioned works (such as the large rat down the road from me, center of town, roughly 18ft high on the side of a prominent building). He's a sell-out, but then why on earth not?. He's topical and satirical, imo a humorous and most richous dude.

I do find it quite ironic that his outbursts about being part of the rat race are becoming commissions. I find it very difficult to appreciate someone who's that much of a hypocrite. Fair enough, he's pretty original and has some good ideas, but I have very little respect for him now.

Im not convinced that is strictly true either? Not purposely disagreeing, but what is your source that the 'rat' was commissioned?!? I have been a big Banky fan for several years, have pretty much followed his work in Bristol and London, but was never aware that anything he has done was 'commissioned'? Are you basing this on it being stenciled in a prominant place? I am happy to be wrong, but curious too. There have been talks about stuff being commissioned, but nothing has been proven. Dont recall reading anything in his books?

A big fan of his work! :)

I took it the one time I had to step foot in Liverpool, also there's no such word as richous.

isnt there another one like banksy?
Similar style?
Didnt someone paint over some Banksy work not too long ago thinking it was standard grafitti?

Complete ****. Hypocritical, overrated corporate whore.

"Smash the system! Reclaim the streets! Dissolve the Rat Race!

...Twenty quid, mate.

Oh! The new book? Thirty five quid."

Everyones got to make a living somehow.

I don't begrudge anyone making a living. It's the blatant hypocrisy of the man and the oversaturation of his substandard stencil work in the media. Complete corporate whore.

It's the graff equivelant of Anita Roddick rubbing shower gel into the eyes of puppies for a fiver.

Some of his stuff is very clever but I have to agree that now with all the commercial exposuse and books etc, it seems like he is just playing along with the "fight the system" themes rather than actually believing in them.

I remember talking to a few people 'in the scene' close to ten years ago about him; the overwhelming impression then was that he was out to make a quick buck.

Some graffiti is great I like the commissioned stuff but why make a hero out of a lawbreaker surely it just encourages more kids to spray paint other's property.
