My sister has asked me to take her car for an MOT and it expires on the 14th, since we are away from the 5th to the 12th I have had to book it for the 14th.

Now I have had a check of her tyres and they have maybe 2-2.5mm tread depth so I was going to advise her to replace them fairly sharpish, but I have also just noticed a gash in one of them.

Now she is going to definatly get these changed when we get back, but will it go through an MOT like this as we don't have time to get the tyres changed before the 14th?

that looks like it will fail due to low tread

do what i did, i just made my MOT tester wait slightly as i got a new tyre at the local garage on the way to the MOT. MOT was booked for 9, Garage openned at 8:30, was there at openning time, got tyre changed and was at MOT station for 9:05.

Thought it was accross the middle 75% for tread? Its above the rubber markers that are in the main tyre tread.

haha i'll have to remember that one

Mot Tester, the tread might be uneven, but its better in the middle, honest guv :D

I wouldn't expect that to be a fail, though it may get an advisory. Small cuts are permissible providing the ply or cords aren't exposed.

I don't know the exact parameters but this sounds about right as I got an advisory for a small cut across the tread width, the guy just said that I should probably get it changed when I could but it wasn't a major issue.

Hes right though you only have to have 1.6mm in the central 3/4 of the tyre the out side edges can be completely bald as long the cords aren't poking out it's still legal. :)

Just Take it for its test.

If it's a pass, it's a pass.

If the tyre is a fail, get a new one, then a very short retest having not left the garage.

If it fails on a whole bunch of expensive things, then you haven't just wasted money fitting a tyre.

Its a council station so they do nothing except test. I am worried they might say its unroadworthy and I can't drive it, so I'll have to find time to get some new rubber.

Sums up the worth of a fresh MOT tbh.

I don't think it was meant entirely seriously ;)

And btw, yeah i think the gash in the sidewall will fail the MOT, but don't know how people can say that it'll fail on the tread as well. As stated above, there needs to be 1.6mm of tread across 75% of the middle of the tyre.
