Headphones for gaming, upgrading from Plantronics Audio90

I've had these for years, they served me well (i know they're far from the best)

Have a problem now where the right ear sounds kinda fuzzy (they've taken a kicking over the years)

What shall i replace them with? at the moment using onboard realtek hd audio -i don't trust any other card in Vista 64 :o:(

What else could i go for? don't really care if it's got a mic, might be useful in the future.

(what are wireless headphones like..?)
 
what if i put my xfi music in the pc, can you please be helpful and not turn this into a typical 'badbob vs the world' thread

if wireless headphones are crap, fair enough :)
 
Headsets are crap... PERIOD !

Invest in some proper headphones, with that budget look at the sennheiser HD555. You will be amazed by how good they sound, and will make your music sound liek nothing you have heard.

161's are very light, and fit on top of your ears, rather than enclosing them. Had the medusa's a few years ago, the sound was ok but they pinched your head after a few hours:D
 
this is a gaming pc only, the 555's ok for positional audio? will 100% not be listening to music on them

In my experience hifi phones are better at positional stuff than normal 2 channel headsets as they're simply better quality due to being designed to accurately place musicians in a soundstage.

There are also those surround headsets (if you were really concerned about directional sound) but i personally would not go near those due to overall sound quality.

For music and gaming my 555's have been great. I'm using on board sound (mobo in sig) with a headphone amp (not really necessary... more for music) and they've been great.

I'll also confirm that the 555's are great. I have them and love them. They sound great and are also very comfortable for extended gaming sessions.

They do bleed sound quite badly though. It's enough that anyone in the same room with you will be able to hear it.
 
Well I have just changed from some 5.1 medusas (which were bloody LOVELY for gaming, I can wholeheartedly recommend them!) to some Razer barracudas audio card and headset.

The reason I changed was my medusas (which were about 3 years old and had been on many journeys and abused in many ways) had begun to crack on one side. The sound was still fine, just some plastic from when I stepped on them!!
I really like the barracuda stuff that I'm using right now. It's great for positional audio (as good as the Medusas). They also glow blue! Yay for tack!

But either way, as a fellow gamer who doesn't listen to music (much) on the PC through the headphones - I find that the 5.1 headsets are ideal. Plus you've got the built in mic (which on the Medusa headset was superb quality - not quite so good on the Barracudas, but not bad by any stretch of the imagination), which is great for chatting to your mates :)

Personally, I wouldn't bother going for some music-based headphones if you want them for gaming and not music. The sound quality on many headsets is really poor, but the two that I mentioned have really pretty good quality sound reproduction. Plus the Medusas I had also had vibration, which was quite something when an arty strike goes off next to you in BF2!!!

HaHa! Mine would laugh if she read this. When I get online with my friends from back home in Canada, the trash talk that comes out of my mouth always surprises her.
 
goldring dr150 are better than hd555 at £60 though but well worth the extra tenner.
 
I have the HD555 and they're absolutely brilliant for COD. EAX enabled sounds great, and it's easy to pinpoint footsteps coming from all directions.

Yes the senn 555 are great for positional audio, just like gt_junkie said. The quality of drivers and design makes these gimmicky headsets seem like toys with their 7.1.2.3.1.5.6.7.1 audio and 6+ drivers in each side. Just think of all the cost gone into the one driver per side in senns.

You said that you won't use them for music, but just try them out in your mp3 player and try some of the music on you pc through them. They will knock your socks off ;)
