Weekend Special - XFX GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB Extreme Edition @ £149.99+VAT (£176.24)

Just imagine the power though?. Crysis wouldn't be in one (a crisis) for much longer on your system with a GTX ;). Or if your TV's resolution is 1360x768 then the GTS would be a better buy. The GT would be fine but if you ever get a higher resolution screen then the GT might be a bad buy for the future.

I'm battling with your resistance I feel but as I'm part of the dark side now (Nvidia) then it's inevitable that I shall win muahahahaaaa. Now go and buy yourself a new card and play Crysis "The way it's meant to be played" :p.

I am trying to wait, crysis i have already finished it so not sure i go back to it until later in the year just finished kanes wrath so still got a few games laying about unfinished seams i get bored easier now.
But was looking at a PS3 for gt5p with mgs4 coming out soon is tempting me.
Playing planescape torment had it years and just found it never really started before.

Reason why i not upgraded is my tv res and the fact is feb/march 07 i thought like a lot of people next gen would be out nov 07 so got a 320 instead of a gtx and i am going to wait until next even if it kills me :p trouble is i can change my mind quite easy and impulse buy and we still got all weekend .

Question is whether my Jeantech 450W PSU is up to it

Hello cjph, the Jeantech 450W power supply unit that you have has a combined rating of 22 amps on the 12 volt rail. Now, a single Nvidia 8800 GTX consumes around 170 watts under load which equates to 14 amps. Your overclocked Intel E2160 will consume around 85 watts which equates to 7 amps. Add a hard drive in rated at one amp and then some for the extra head room, you are looking at drawing around 24 amps on the 12 volt rail. So, the Nvidia 8800 GTX along with the system you have stated will not run on your Jeantech power supply unit.

Now, if you are looking at purchasing a new power supply unit, may I suggest either the Corsair VX 450W ATX PSU if you are on a tight budget or if you have a bit more money to play with, take a look at the Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU. They are both superb units. :)

Lord oh lord what a price....

Such a shame my motherboard isn't SLi :(

Though I could replace the 7800GT thats in my Media Centre with one... could get one for my other half actually, as she's looking to start building a new machine soon and this might be a nice building block for her :)

Hey Fire Wizard - many thanks -as I thought I would have to bump up the amps to get to GTX land and will prob try to stretch to 600W+SLI for the future.

Cheers.

I bought the OCuk 8800gtx a couple of months ago and im happy with it. But if I got this as well would I benefit on a 24" monitor playing games in sli? There would be a big improvement wouldnt there?

Im playing COD4, Crysis, CS:Source etc and they run ok. But I thought having 2 gtx's would make the games even better :)

I should add as well I want to play them at 1920 x 1200 res

I would say go for it. You probably will see a pretty decent jump, but i can't say if that jump will justify the increased price...

God, this is torture.

I recently fell madly in love with Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl, both for the game and the dynamic lighting. I have a 1920x1200 monitor and a 1950Pro (mostly used for strategy games), which manages about 20fps on the settings I'd like to use. I look at video card reviews, and I see everything from 40 to 70fps for the 8800GTX on Stalker depending on exactly what settings they use (there's "maximum" on the basic settings and then there's really maximum in the advanced settings). So I think an 8800GTX is borderline, and some mods I'd like to try slow it down, and there's a prequel coming out later this year which will be "about the same system requirements" (i.e. slower).

And I tell myself I must resist an 8800GTX and play something else for now while I wait for the GT200.

And then a deal like this happens...

i couldn't resist great price , and as i game at 1920 x 1200 i am hoping to see a little improvement over my gts .

Did you use AA at this resolution and ever feel the burn with the games you are playing?.

Ok i really want one but knowing that the new generation of cards is just round the corner is putting me off right now.

I don't want it to be outdated within a few months, like what happened with my current card.

From your rig in your sig you deserve a new graphics card as the X1800 looks out of place with all that other gear :). Get a 8800GTX for that resolution.

There will be cards out in the next few months but at the low prices of today it would a worthwhile buy. Even if you want to spend cheaply for now so you can wait for the next generation then the 8800GT at £117 is an amazing boost over your current card. No matter what get an 8800 card as you'll love the power boost. Just decide what you want to spend.
