Sensible price for an oil & filter change?

pretty much impossible I'd of thought?

I heard on here thats what Smart do (Smart Cars) because there is no drain plug sump (wtf?) But for a normal car, how would the pipe get feed all through the block to the sump? Too much stuff in the way, non?

Its called a Pella Pump and it slots down the dipstick feed.

Yep. The longest part is waiting for the old stuff to drain out. The last oil change I did was on the 200SX, jacked it up so you can slide a drip tray underneath (90 seconds maybe?), undo the sump plug, (10 seconds), stand up and reach down into the bay and undo the old filter by hand (45 seconds)

Wait for it to drain (some cars drain fast, some don't)

Wipe off any oil that's drooled over the block (45 seconds) replace filter (20 seconds) do up sump plug, slide out drip tray, lower car (60 seconds) fill oil (30 seconds)

DONE

Agreed in principle, when we did my mates S14 it was relatively painless (despite having the dodgiest dipstick known to man)

However, despite all the stuff i've done to my car I always have most problems changing oil.

From stuck filters, to burred sump plugs, to actually losing the sump plug at 4.00pm on a winter evening (this was the last time).

did the primera gt for around £20 iirc around £12 for the oil £6 for the filter and a couple of quid for the new sump plug and washer. Didn't take very long, just a bar steward to get the filter off due to it been hard to access, a lot easier this time round then it was when i first got it, wasn't sure how long that oil filter had been on there but required a bit of a-class bodgery envolving hammer and screw driver to get it off.....I know the oil wasn't the best in the world but its not a high performance vehicle and its 10 years old so dont think i will gain much using expensive oil

Unless you have a B series Honda, then it's 45 minutes:p

Back me up here guys, I know I have girly wrists but it really is in a stupid position:D

45 mins is a UK record! Well done!

It's just absurd. Especially when I got my car, it had been tightened on a ramp by the hulk himself.

I don't have girly wrists, but I do have a well trained monkey to send up there especially for the job.

Tim, do you use HAMP filters? They are smaller and I find them much easier to remove.

Yep, got a HAMP here ready with 4L of Castrol GTX 10w40 (fed up of burning away £45 Silkolene), will be changing it next week I think. I've always used HAMP.

Interesting about the size thing though, I was advised to try a S2000 filter as it's bigger and easier to get hold of:p

Yea, really matters in a 13 year old 1.6 litre petrol engine

I like to look after it, whats wrong with that. Anyway correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't your BMW engine have significantly higher mileage than mine. This doesn't really put you in a position to criticise me for choosing a good brand of oil when I'm sure you would have nothing other than SLX/Edge in yours ;)

Thats slightly different given that the specification of the dual VANOS M54 engine requires a particular type of oil. Using the oil that was developed in conjunction with the vehicle manufacturer for that engine is hardly a daft idea. Besides - it gets what BMW put in it when it's serviced. It's no different in that regard to not putting anything but 5w30 in, say, a 96 Mondeo.

But your car doesn't ask for Castrol, it's a regular, reliable, tough, 1.6 litre petrol engine with no fancy garnish or sauce, so it doesn't need superamazing oil. Sure, don't put Tesco Value Motor Oil in it, but pouring scorn on the stuff Ford sells for 15 quid is a tad OTT, really.

Your car doesnt ask for castrol either.

Nothing wrong with wanting decent oil in their car regardless of how crap other people may think it is

Although there are other oils I can use from the BMWLL01 list, it does specifically say Castrol in the owners handbook and on the oil filler cap ;)

Amazing isnt it. You would have thought someone had paid for that to be there

You know exactly what my point is even though you'd never admit that on here so lets agree to disagree.

Not really, you seem to be giving clarkey crap for wanting to put oil he trusts into his car. Much like people buy coca cola over crappy supermarket stuff.

What is there to admit? Mobil 1 is also approved for use in your car.
