Life Turning Point...

I've switched jobs 3 times in 2 years, each time getting more money, but still on bugger all, but you just gotta be clever about it.

Was told yesterday i might be made redundant due to lack of work, redid my CV and put it up last night, have had 2 agencies ring me already saying they've got jobs wanting my skills.

My degree is in Information Technology and Business management, but i would seriously consider not putting degrees on paper, they put employers off because of the type of people rgaduates usually are (Work? i haven't done that before so i don't know wtf i'm doing, but i can pour a good pint!).

5 years in same job for me would be beyond comprehending. 2% payrise is it per year? switching jobs i'll get closer to 10% every 6 months.

Can't do it forever though! eventually no one will look at you as you'll be seen as a risk. Why invest in you when you jump ship after training and start to put back into the company etc?

Yep, exactly why i try to be careful..however:

Last time i broke my ankle working for a tiny consultancy (5 people?). They wiggled and squirmed about my contract, pulling out things like "you aren't entitled to a thing as you broke your ankle outside of work hours". I then offered my resignation without notice. Buggers refused a reference, very cheap.

This time, well, the regional office has ran out of work for me to do, so it's redundancy.

Neither are my fault and the last one doesn't look bad on my CV at all, just got off phone with one of the agencies that have called within a couple of hours of putting up my CV lol.

It's perfect, i get to leave and ask for £1-2k more a year, but i'm being made redundant, so the issue is not with me and i'll get a great reference. :D

I'm still undecided what to do to be honest with you... guess I'm going to have to think about it over the weekend...

You're s smart guy and I wasn't aware of how well you're educated. That combined with your experience is easily worth more than 21K.

A lot of graduate programs start on more than that, nevermind the added experience you've got.

If I was you i'd be looking for a new job without a doubt. You're in a city so you've got a fair bit more of opportunity than some people.

well I was looking for a lot more then what I'm getting now... I have had enough with being paid nothing for doing, well, everything...

London is where you want to be if you want the numerous top dollar jobs mate... the only problem with it is that some of the extra pay you gain may be swallowed up in increased living costs. However, doing a good few years in London for a couple of major companies would likely see you being able to go back to Liverpool into a nice job a few rungs up the ladder with a nice salary to kick back on and do your saving.

The guys helped me with a number of things and i'm really surprised that's what he's getting paid.

With 5 years experience and that sort of qualifications I can see why Stelly isn't happy, i'd feel extremely fed up also.

Personally I suggest you put a fair bit of effort into seeking new employment :)

I'm on 18k and if I don't get bumped to 24K by Sept I'm applying elsewhere

This is my first job out of Uni...I'm going to try and get a significany payrise each year

plus you'll get the added pressure, pace of life changes etc etc. London is where the big money is but of course everyone knows that hence lots of competition for spots together with all the associated unpleasantness that goes with it. if you're well prepared for it and can take all the bad stuff for the cash then go for. 2 examples:

- a mate who is an account director at an advertising agency, he earns top top wedge, perhaps 3 or 4 times what i do, but works constantly, a 7 or 8 hour day is a rarity, he works late regularly and weekends but him and his wife are now able to move out of london into the commuter belt. but he enjoys it and is prepared to put up with it for the rewards.

- my girlfriend worked at an advertising agency in nottingham. the company closed it's nottingham office and asked her if she'd like to relocate to london. her parents are down there so she gave it a go, she lasted 6 months. she was earning 3-4k more for effectively the same job but she hated all the people and back stabbing, one up manship and general bitchiness.

different industry from yourself obviously but it's something to be aware of. i guess it depends on if it's just money that motivates or progression in the job - do you want to be director of IT in the future or continue being the hands on guy? what do you need to do and where do you need to go to get there?

Fine I'll sort it out myself :p

Stelly

LOL you post at 12:55 and expect an immediate response hehe. ;)

Can't possibly advise you. I do know that if you are with the government is it wise to jump ship? Can you not get some sort of leave sorted with them. I work for government and can have a career break if I like. Explore these avenues thus you could get some more experience but still have a safety net.

Stelly,

I'm from Liverpool, 2 years older than you. If you're not constrained by location I'd consider a move. The North West will be constraining your earning power SIGNIFICANTLY.

After graduating, I moved down south and started on more than you're on now. That was 7 years ago. I plan to move back up north in the future when I've built significant equity. I know many people (simple bachelors degree) on over 60K here at our kind of age.

I've never had a payrise under 15%, maximum was the latest..39%!

Thanks All :)

Does anyone know how I can contact nin9abadga, or nin9abadga can you contact me on my e-mail, I have tried to email your trust account but it bounced back.

email: stellyuk at gmail dot com.

Thanks,

Stelly

Hi All,

Myself and the misses are looking for a house at the moment, around Manchester, I dont want to do the whole long distance thing, and she works for NetApps in Manchester, so I dont think that she will want to leave such a good company to be honest with you...

I didnt realise that the northwest would restrict me that much, the thing that annoys me at the moment is that my boss in on around £32k a year and doesnt know half of my with an degree in Geography, go work that one out because I can't!

I have an interview this afternoon, so I'm getting ready for that at the moment, its not that much more about £24k and I would be working shifts... I will see how it goes I guess..

Stelly

It's amazing how quickly you can get in a rut, to be honest your current employer is taking advantage, don't get me wrong - if I was the employer I would too but it's not good for you :)

From the descrption '24k and shifts' I don't think thats the right job for you but there could be chances for training and promotion I don't know about. It would at least get you out of your rut and back onto the job market :)

Stelly have you considered contracting? If you let me know specifically what roles you're searching for then I'll let you know what you could look forward to.

Ive found in life that you dont always get what you should, the IT market is notorious in the last few anyway, for taking the pee when it comes to paying top dollar, lets face theres a lot of IT monkeys around now.

Plus qualifications dont give you an automatic right to top money.

There's without a doubt jobs for ASP.net developers paying far more than 21K, especially with that sort of experience.

Just get on all the usual IT Job websites and i'm sure you'll find something.

Good luck and keep us updated :)

Are you searching for jobs in just your local area or further afield? Have you considered working south where there may possibly be more vacancies for your skill set and a higher price paid for them to?

the interview went ok... the company is a distrubution, just in time they called it, which means that there has to be a turn around on a problem of 2.5 hours or their is trouble...

There are no perks with the job what so ever, and it is shifts, I seemed to know more then my manager again, which I dont think it anything new to be honest with you... its the same sort of support that I'm doing at the moment, but with less users I currently support about 800 users, this company will be about 160, more money less work...

I'm not sure if I would accept it at the moment, I have to take my holidays at certian times of the year... which can be annoying with only 3 floating days...

What do you all think?

Any job offers around here? :)

Stelly

I think you should be on more than that with that amount of experience. I start on £24k in Sept with 0 experience (1st class BSc Comp Sci). With 5 years I would have though you would be on 30k+ at least. Staying in the north is going to restrict you especially in the IT industry...
