School options!

Is this for GCSEs? THREE choices?! Man that is crazy. I got 5-6 or something. We had to do English, Maths, Science. Then I chose French, German, History and Media Studies long course and Food Studies short course. Food Studies! Useless that.

We also did PE/General Studies but they weren't GCSE subjects.

Thats pretty lame. I had to take English, maths, language, social subject (History, Geography or modern studies), a science, and 4 others of my choice.
RE would be ok if it was properly unbiased, but when I had it we learned about the bible nearly all the time. I'd of liked a better overview of all the worlds religions.

Compulsory RE and only 3 options, is it an independant school by any chance?

iirc I had 5 options. I chose the double science award, history, french, design & technology and interated humanities. The only compulsory subjects were english (lang & lit), maths and science.

I thought education was supposed to be advancing not regressing.

My year 10 was the year they made RE Compulsery.. but then again we rareley did any work.

If I remember correctly I had quite a few choice (This was like 2003)

Obviously the choice of Tech Courses (Food, Woodwork, Plastics, Metal Work and Sewing)

A choice between History and Geography

Bussiness Studies and I think it was Travel and Leisure as well as PE Theory.

I never had any choice in the Science, I ended up doing some retarded Applied Science Course instead of the Normal, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

RE/RS was compulsary for us too. i hated it with a passion but managed to get an A somehow :S we had to chose 5 other options to go along side maths english and science

Its like the sun, it goes through cycles. Scottish schooling system is particularly full of bureaucracy, restructuring and generally ***king up the whole system at the moment. It will all fail, they will realise their ideas were silly and it will go back to being good....for a while. It’s nearly always someone in local government trying to justify their job by coming up with some bright ideas that actually have no relevance to the classroom, waste the teachers time and disrupt the learning process. My dad got early retiring from teaching as his job (head of computing) was being changed to head of all the computing based subjects (head of computer, business studies, IT), for no extra pay and without any training on the subjects he didn’t know anything about.
Bit of an off topic rant, but some of my parents stories about the things they have implemented in schools really grinds my gears.

Here we have to take 4 options, aswell as double science, english and maths..

You can have her removed from R.E i believe. They can't force you to learn about religion now, can they?

Our R.E course was a short course ( started year 9 finished year 10 )> Managed to get a B, my test included a paragraph about polar bears and grizzly bears..for extra ... marks?? Although i doubt anyone else's did =P

I'm assuming this is gcse.

How can r.e be compulsory?

Are compulsory where maths, English and sciences(either double award or separate, depending on group)

I had only 3 choices.

However, I could choose from geography, history, music, RE, drama, and media studies.

What is the case in the OP?

Languages, RE, PE and DT were all compulsory along with the obvious.

There's many more choices at my school then the few everyone else is saying... Dt, art, df, df materials, graphic design, french, spanish, media studies, dance, music, pe, geography, history modern world, history ( about terrorism etc ) , ict double award, and i can't remember any more :p

Why can't it just be 3 subjects of your choice?

Presumably timetabling - I couldn't pick exactly the combination I wanted to because of the groupings of subjects and the columns they were divided into. I seem to recall I could choose from 6 columns of subjects though for Standard Grade along with the compulsory Maths and English so I obviously haven't been as unlucky as some.

I don't think it is R.E. as such now, when I was leaving High School it was changing to R.M.P.E. (Religious, Moral & Philosophical Education) so it should cover a broader spectrum although if it was anything like the classes we had it won't be particularly worthwhile. Most of what I know about religion, morality or philosophy (and it isn't much) is through my own outside reading.

I don't think it's a bad thing, it's not as though it's religious indoctrination, it's discussing moral issues etc, it gets the pupils to use a degree of free thought..

exactly, people dont seem to understand this. They see r.e and automatically assume they are going to be preached to about god and jesus.

Religious Education is there to educate people about religion. Allow them to make their own minds on whats right and wrong. Its also there to teach about moral issues such as euthanasia, gender equality and such.

Its there to show kids how to think for themselves.

Was about to say the same thing.

I agree witch is why it's compulsory up until GCSE. But GCSE as well as doing core subjects. You start choosing things you are either interested in or what you need for further education.

That would be an issue. We were given a piece of paper with a table on it. It had 5 rows. We had to choose one subject from each row. If we chose 2 or more subjects from a row there would have been a clash as those subjects in those rows were timetabled to be on at the same time.

You really don't need to narrow down you choices that early. Say you want to do business or economics at a level, you don't need to do them for GCSE, just get a good maths grade. You do not need to specialise at GCSE.

It helps, it's also a lot easier to get good grades in what you like, rather than what you are forced to do.

Definitely. I'm straight A/A* in subjects I chose and those that are core. RS, Citizenship, Spanish GCSE, French AS, however, I am looking at C, B, B, D/C in. It isn't going to look as good on my CV and the like in future :/
