2008 Bahrain GP - Race 3/18

Saw Blundell saying this at the end of the highlights show (which I was watching in the hope of the press conference :( ).
Fair play to him on being the only one on ITV to not have his lynching torch out ready to join the mob....

The continuous "we dont really know anything but it has to be a brake test from Alonso" rubbish that Brundle & Allen were spouting yesterday became tedious very quickly.

Brundle never said that. What he said was that he would like to see the telemetry and it was unlikely Renault would publish it.

Allen is an arse, but this has been discussed to death before.

Im still unsure about the Alonso / Hamilton thing. From a brief couple of replays on ITV coverage, it looks like Hamilton just gets better traction out of the corner and catches himself out.

A lot of people seem to be missing the fact that Hamilton's front wing was already broken before the crash. The hoop bit over the top had broken off. You can see the left side flapping about just before he hit Alonso. He gets a good run out of the corner and tried to get to the car to turn right to duck under Alonso but understeers due to the broken wing and a bit of rash decision making and just runs into the back of him.

Hmm, I didn't know that, did it happen at the first corner? I was sure he slightly tapped a Renault (Alonso?) at the first corner away from the start.

Yeah, but its not like they had anything more interesting to talk about, the rest of the race was boring as poo

Dunno if this has already been posted in this thread already... Anyone know the significance of Hamilton waving his fist as he passed everyone he overtook?

British eccentricity! <shakes fist at entirety of forum> "Neeaaaaaa Sheeeeeee!!"

Yes and Ron Dennis mentioned this. He said that McLaren's telemetry indicated that the front wing downforce was lost 2 seconds prior to the incident with Fernando. This indicates that his wing maybe took a hit on the first corner and the fracture eventually snapped...

This would also explain Hamilton's confusion over the incident because with no front wing downforce of course his car would simply get sucked into the slipstream remarkably easily or at least significantly easier than he is used to.

ITs not so much a loss of downforce, but a sudden change. If you do the same corner the same all weekend and then suddenly theres a change then you can just drift a bit wide, or slide a little, and into the back you go.

And re: Allen, to coin a Clarson phrase:

"Its not the winning, its not the taking part, its just bashing Allen!"

Sorry it was Martin Whitmarsh - the sort of new boss at McLaren...

McLaren have confirmed that Lewis Hamilton’s front wing broke immediately prior to his running into the rear of Fernando Alonso’s Renault on lap two of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix.

The unusual nature of the accident - both drivers were accelerating on a straight section of track - prompted cynics to question whether Alonso had ‘brake tested’ his former team mate. Renault’s telemetry suggested otherwise, and McLaren say they have no suspicion of any wrongdoing on the part of the Spaniard.

When I went into the engineers’ room and started looking at the details that I realised Lewis’s upper front wing had disappeared about two seconds before the accident, so he suddenly lost downforce,” explained McLaren’s Formula One CEO, Martin Whitmarsh.

“We haven’t analysed why that happened but we suspect the structure had been weakened by previous contact. To be fair to Lewis it could have broken of its own accord, but that has never happened before so contact is the most likely cause. There’s certainly no evidence that Fernando did anything wrong.”

Such a failure would have robbed Hamilton’s car of not only downforce, but also drag, giving it an unexpected burst of acceleration, explaining the unlikely impact.

Sort of new? As far as I know he hasn't had any new roles at McLaren.

As for the Alonso Hamilton impact it was just luck that it was two ex-teammates colliding with each other. Had this happened to say Rosberg and Hamilton it would be deemed a racing incident.

He probably felt that everyone should move out of his way, by virtue of the fact that he is the Messiah :D
