Tax Rebate

First of all youll need to complete a P50 and send that off and wait until your tax code changes on your payslip.

Then I contacted my tax office and told them, they agreed immediately that I was taxed incorrectly. THe first time id left the company and they sent me a cheque about 4-5 weeks after the call, the second time I was working so they gave it to me in my next paycheque.

This is not correct, he does not need a P50 as he continued to work and that tax year is now over...

Chippie's post explains it best.

As you didn't, you will need to wait until your current employer (assuming youa re still working) gives you your P60 (the have to give you this by mid May), and then send that and your P45 with a covering letter detailing who you worked for and when, and covering any periods when you were not working (remember to state if you claimed any benefits or not) to your tax office.

I think your assumption may be wrong... (therefore your advice).

Think fox is still studenty type is he not? Anyway I don't think he works.

It won't get adjusted.

Edit: and as far as I am concerned, it still is HM Customs and Excise. IR sucks rotten eggs! :p

Not entirely an assumption.

Yea it's about that for me as well - yours was a placement as well? I left it after I finished the placement as it seemed you couldnt claim it back immediatly if you were planning to work again in the same tax year. Which I did - but not significantly enough to really affect the rebate due.

He said 'did', chich would imply that employment is no more.

If he is currently a student bum, he will need to phone in.

If he is working somewhere earning it *should be adjusted.

We will find out when he comes back. :)

The point is that Chippie's advice stands if he worked at all after finishing his placement (which he states he did), as chippie covered both possible situations.

Having also finished a placement myself in August last year and going through the process this advice sounds correct to me:

"As you didn't, you will need to wait until your current employer (assuming youa re still working) gives you your P60 (the have to give you this by mid May), and then send that and your P45 with a covering letter detailing who you worked for and when, and covering any periods when you were not working (remember to state if you claimed any benefits or not) to your tax office.

If you are not currently employed, then send a similar letter, but send all the P45s you got during the year."

No no no no no. There is a reason it's Revenue and Customs. That's because the revenue bit is far better than the customs bit ;)

Are you an ex customs person by any chance? I'm guessing we have the same employer, unless you are one of the many who have just gone to UKBA...

Anyhow, the point is my post is correct. If fox continued to work at the end of the tax year he needs his p60 and p45. If he didn't he just needs his P45s from all jobs in the year to get a refund.

It won't get 'adjusted' as the refund he wants is from last year (the year that ended 5 April 2008).

And all those people saying to fill in a P50, don't. It is for in-year refunds, and as last year has ended is completely unecessary

Fox, you don't need to do anything. Eventually they'll decide you've paid too much and either send you a cheque or adjust your tax code (depending on how far out you are). They've done this for me a couple of times now.

If you claim, you'll get it back faster, but is it enought to be worth the hassle?

I'm way due a tax rebate, but Im also not sure how i go about it.

I'd been employed at a restaurant and gave them my latest p45 so they could sort out my tax rebate to be sent, which I dont think they've ever done. They still have it and I dont know how to go about getting them to send it off or getting it back or what they are legally required to do.

I was there nearly a month but left recently because they were absolutely **** to work for and never gave me hours, so I left on the 25th March and started my new job, but Ive heard nothing of my rebate since i started at the restaurant on the 15th Feb.

I rang up the tax office and they just said I'd done everything I can do and that they should sort it out now? but I dont think they will because they are the worst company and I left on bad terms with them, although it would be illegal for them to do nothing, Im not sure where to go from here to get my rebate!! Grr

Go back to the company and get your P45 then get your year end P60 from your new job and send them off with a covering letter as per chippie's advice above.

1. Take photocopies of EVERYTHING you send to HMRC. They still have my P60 and P45s from last year.

2. Send them a letter saying something like 'Please find enclosed my P60s / P45s for tax year 200x - 200y. I think I have overpaid tax for this year. Please check this for me and refund any overpayment.

3. Wait. Don't make any imminent plans for the money. Wait some more. Imagine what it would be like to have the money some time before Christmas. Ask yourself why they don't pay you interest on the money they owe you. Ask yourself this more when you realise that they would charge you interest and hound you like a dog if you owed them a single penny.

If you phone the office responsible for your tax then they'll tell you to the day how long their delay on mail is, after april it normally exceeds 6 weeks. Take that delay and add the time taken to process your application and post it back to you (a couple of days) and thats when you'll get your money.

Not in my experience. I've been through this process in each of the last 6 years and it never gets any better.

When i was due tax back, i just went down to my local tax office with my p60 and some wage slips, they soon sorted it out, got a cheque back within a week or so. It took all of 30 mins to sort out.

Best thing to do is get off your behind and get down to the tax office and talk with someone there.

that you contact your local Tax Office and they sort it out for you,.

Someones probably already said everything, but you have to use the tax office you are registered at. Which for large companies is usually not your local area. But the office where they deal with pay.

Done it several times, you just find tax office phone them up, say you think you arer owed tax. They send you a form, how much you have earned and when. Send it of and within a few weeks you will receive a cheque or bill.
