Does anyone else think they are evil?

I've just gotten rid of mine after having it for years. I have never done a more liberating act!

Its crazy how this thing which is a luxury has come to be seen as a necessity.

Reasons for getting rid of it:

- Annoying having to charge it, even if I have to do it only once a week
- With a mobile there is no 'escape from it all'
- Annoying having something on your person at all times
-Annoying have to think to turn it off/put it on silent when entering libraires, cinemas etc
-Annoying being contacted pointlessly by your mates and other people, which you have to respond to with a mundane and time wasting text
-It is frankly a cost for which does not bring much pleasure to me
-I hate the culture of them and their effect on society - it has been proven how contingent they make social arrangement; that is, everything is always subject to change, things get cancelled more often because cancelling is only a phone call away
- They are uncomfortable to use if you have a lengty conversation, due to their heat
-Seeing them sitting around the house is literally on your desk is uncessary clutter

Now I have gotten rid of it I realised what i thought I would - I didn't NEED it!

The problem is it all becomes a self fulfilling prophecy; because we all have them we perpetuate their use, all for no reason.

To me, there is only one reason to use them: if for whatever reason you don't have broadband in your house and you do not need a BT line rental, it is cheaper to get one of the 500m cross network contracts than it would to make the calls on a BT line. However, I don't even think I could get myself to do that even if it made financial sense, because I hate the sight of them!

What do you think?

Still costs to make 0800 and other freephone calls on mobiles, and afaik numbers like 0870 and 0845 etc cost more from mobiles than they do on landlines.

Good point, although the saynoto0870 website is great for avoiding it!

It gives you alternate numbers insted of forcing you to call o0845's etc...
 
Well being a teen I think it's a necessity to have, and I also have my mobile for security purposes. I have it on me all the time - they are not just for socializing. Games, maps, email etc. I am not gonna buy a teeny PC.
 
couldnt live without my phone and i dont text my friends stupid messages or call people for the hell of it..

Yes, they are good for safety, but people years ago survived.

I object to the safety idea, except perhaps for kids, because it is part of the modern mentality that everthing can be avoided/planned for, instead of relaxing and ejoying life.

The perverse reality is, of course, that they may still be bad for your health - although there are still lots of conflicting reports - it would be sad that people might be carrying for safety and end up killing themselves.

Also, I suspect more people will have died as a result of the invention of the phone than saved - through carelessness while driving/walking!
 
The only problems with mobiles I have are the chav idiots who play their rap 'music' on public transport. Is there a person here who doesn't consider grabbing their phones and using them to beat the scummy ****'s to oblivion with them?

It would be fun to just grab it then throw it out of the window, then calmly sit down like nothing ever happened. The look on their faces would be priceless.

well for one i use it to check the time but thats not important..but when im meeting someone and if theyre running late i could always check up on them..i also dont know many numbers by heart so i gotta rely on my phones phone book..i have to call my friend for him to open the gate everytime i go over to his place..

its small things like that that you dont really notice day to day makes a mobile phone for me something i couldnt live without..theyre not good examples but you get the idea..
 
I don't see the problem, like most people I have one. But I don't feel the need to always have it on me, to reply instantly or at all to texts. I don't see the problem, just because you have one doesn't mean you have to use it all the time.

Don't get me wrong, they have their uses, but the thing you mention about telling them you/they are running late is a good example of our desire to know everything all the time, rather than just relaxing.

I did it recently, I had no idea where the person was, waited for 15 minutes and had fun watching the world go by without a care in the world, instead of having something stuck to my head trying to work out what had gone wrong.

We just all need to chill!:cool:
