All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Ive always thought the board offered Wenger the money but it's his philosophy that's meant it hasn't been spent.

Yeah I thought this as well, apparently he went to manage in Japan because he was sick of the French powerhouses splashing francs around.

it seems ingrained, who's idea is the wage policy though? if they don't spend the money on what they've already got and they have a manager reluctant to spend money on bringing in new talent. something simply isn't working with their current policies as evidenced by their comparitve lack of success over the last few years. the club is a business and it's good to be fiscally responsible but at the end of the day it's the players and success in competition that will drive the clubs profitability.

Basically the club has a massive debt due to the stadium.

Since most of the players are on similar wages, and Flamini was offered much more, despite being of similar quality, the increase would be Flam's increase multiplied by say 10, since everyone else will want a similar increase.

Arsenal aren't able to do that due to the debt, so it is cheaper just to buy a player who is happy to get an amazing wage, not a relatively amazing(to footballers) wage.

If everyone is getting 20k/week more, it's going to be cheaper to spend a few million on a player and pay them the original wage.

Fair enough really.

Song for DM now, or Gattuso.. he said he'd like to play in the Prem recently.. I reckon he could do a job ;):D

yeah he could, only thing is newcastle/tottenham/whoever are going to offer him £30k a week more than you are.

it'll be hard to attract the top players if you don't pay the going rate in wages and i'm just guessing but i think a gattuso would be asking at least as much as a flamini to be honest.

let him go i say, until this season he's been a fringe player and he's certainly replaceable even though he's been good for us this season.

i'd be more gutted if Hleb isn't staying even though i'm uncertain what his situation is tbh....but today they were throwing his name in the mix as uncertainties for next season?

Spurs can't compete with Arsenal on the wages front anymore, neither can Newcastle unless they're stupid...

Spurs may not be able to compete but Newcastle can. Martins is reportedly gonna be offered around 80/90k a week and Ashley obviously can afford this otherwise he wouldn't offer it. He's already paid off loads of the clubs debt and so isn't gonna offer wages that will drag the finances down again.

Anyway I don't even know what you mean 'cant compete with Arsenal' surely the Flamini episode has shown that Arsenal can't/won't pay high wages, Newcastle's wage bill is probably already higher than Arsenal's.

I don't want to get into a slanging match but open your eyes mate...

Arsenal have a massive annual income due to superior attendance and CL football aswell as success.

What do Newcastle have? A big stadium, whoopeedoo. Any club can splash out big money... doesn't mean it's sustainable does it?

Arsenal can compete with any club in Europe... "if they wanted to" ;)

Now trust me I'm not going to big them up if it's not true am I?

As for your boast about Martins... so what? Robbie Keane has been on that for a few years... big deal??

Did you read what I said? Ashley has pumped millions in, about 70m or something iirc, why would he waste that money by offering wages he can't afford. Arsenal may be able to offer 200k a week but if they are not gonna they can't exactly compete can they? The whole discussion has been about Arsenal not willing to pay high wages, then you say other teams can't compete .

Furthermore, I wasn't boasting about Martins' potential wages I was just repeating the figures being reported. Owen earns 120k a week, miles more than Keane, that's boasting.

Edit- When you say 'if they wanted to' what do you even mean? Why does it matter if you can compete but don't? I could be the best footballer in the world but it's irrelevant if I don't bother playing.

Henry earnt £10m in his last season, so it's not like Arsenal can't afford players, it's the clubs choice to keep a wage structure. Break and things coulld sprial like Leeds.

£5m was in wages, apparently.

Flamini is a good player, but one we were prepared to release for a few million to brum, and suddenly he's World class. Yes in an ideal world we would keep him, but he wants silly wages, so for the better of the club we have to keep a wage structure. You sometimes have to break it for a great player ala Henry and Cesc in the future, but a Flamini.

i don't buy that, they're successful financially because much like all premier league clubs they have a ridiculous tv deal and now they've got the emirates they are absolutely raking it in on matchdays. Arsenal's turnover isn't a huge amount short of United's iirc correctly, and their debt is actually lower. yet whereas i believe united show a proper appreciation for the worth of their most valuable assets i think arsenal risk more by nt showing flexibility with their wage structure.

But they have for Henry, it's just they don't think Flamini is worth breaking that structure.

If the Flamini story is true, it's turning out to be a good weekend for Milan. :).

All we need now is a striker, 3 new defenders, a keeper, etc; :p.
