All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

He's not good enough to be a starter for us but he's a handy player to have in your squad. Despite looking terrible he still chips in with goals and suprisingly has quite a few assists too.

From BBC:

Everton have approached Valencia about a deal for their Spain international winger Joaquin, but they face competition for his signature from Roma. (Football365.com, 1322 BST)

Wigan boss Steve Bruce is expected to step up his efforts to sign Egypt striker Amr Zaki over the next few weeks. (Press Association, 1159 BST)

Thierry Henry has insisted he will stay for at least another year with Barcelona, despite a mixed first season in Spanish football. The former Arsenal striker has been linked with a return to the Premier League. (Le Parisien, 1118 BST)

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has indicated he would be interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, but has said "it has to be the player who makes the first step because we don't want conflicts with any team". (Press Association, 0943 BST)

The agent of Porto right-back Jose Bosingwa has dismissed rumours the player has agreed terms with Manchester United. The 25-year-old Portugal international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford ibut Rui Neno insists no club has yet matched Porto's 30m Euros (£23.6m) valuation of the player. (Press Association, 0431 BST)

The Madrid one made me chuckle :D

As for Joaquin, surely some bigger clubs would be interested in him?

I can't see how having 5 rb's would help. Joking aside I agree, we need to find a few cheap gems again this summer

The thing is, at £7.5m for a RB, Sagna was hardly cheap. Apart from Spurs and Chelsea I can't think of many clubs in the history of British football who have spent more than that on a RB.

People think of him as another Wenger 'find' because he wasn't overly well known in this country, but he certainly wasn't a bargain in the way that Toure, Clichy, Fabregas etc were.

In a way I'm glad that Flamini has left Arsenal. It might sound daft but in a way now I think Wenger has to go out and buy a top class CM replacement.

I'm not too sure, since winning the last trophy in 2005 Wenger seems to have made a point of trying to build a new fresh young team. It is very rare that he buys any established players over the age of 25.

I know he rarely does it but this time round I think he has to.

If Flamini would have decided to stay he could have probably got away with getting a youngster in as cover. I really think that if Arsenal want to build on what they have achieved this season they have to buy an established leader in the CM position.

How about Hleb to Inter and Ronaldinho to Arsenal?
Not a bad trade, Ronaldinho with his confidence back would be frightening in a side like Arsenal, and you know he'd jump at the chance to play in the EPL and certainly for Arsenal.

Trouble is though Arsenal/Wenger would never stump up the sort of money required to steal Ronaldhinho away from Barcelona - let alone meet his wage demands!!
Would be one of THE most exciting transfers though. He certainly would flourish at Arsenal I believe.

From the BBC:

Everton boss David Moyes is lining up a £3m bid for out-of-favour Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell. (Various)

Moyes is also prepared to pay £4m for American midfielder Michael Bradley from Dutch side Heerenveen. (Mirror)

Manchester United will sit down with Wigan next week to thrash out an £8m deal for midfielder Wilson Palacios. (The Sun)

And there could be more business between the two clubs, with United looking to offer striker Louis Saha and cash in exchange for Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia. (Mirror)

The Latics, meanwhile, are looking to reinforce their attacking options by making a £4m swoop for Egypt striker Amr Zaky after boss Steve Bruce watched the 25-year-old score twice for his club Zamalek on Monday. (Various)

Tottenham boss Juande Ramos will attempt to lure West Ham's England's Under-21 defender Anton Ferdinand to White Hart Lane in a £6m deal. (The Sun)

The Spaniard will shell out another £6m on Birmingham winger Olivier Kapo, if the Blues are relegated on Sunday. (Mirror)

But Spurs could be set to lose star striker Dimitar Berbatov, who was conspicuous by his absence at the launch of the club's new kit on Tuesday night. (Daily Mail)

I actually think Hargreaves has played well - especially outo of position for the last few appearances.

I laughed when I read the rumour that Saha is being offered to Wigan as part exchange for a deal - cant see anyone risking any kind of good money on him after the nightmare we have had with the injuries (especially balanced against an up and coming player)

These guys may be good but Im still very surprsed Man Utd are reportedly after them - let alone another midfielder (unless OH is used to cover RB slot which could work quite well, but would prefer a natural RB though)

I heard on the radio Diarra is trying to engineer a move away from Pompey already, wants to go to Spurs for some reason. To be fair he did say he wouldnt stay for his whole career there ;).

On Flamini, Wenger said that Flamini had left purely because of the money on offer. He commended the Board for having done the maximum they could to make Flamini a good offer within sensible limits. Interestingly he pointed out that one of the risks of having overseas players at the club is that they are attuned to the concept of moving clubs.

On transfer activity. He said he was looking for a defensive player, to address the team’s weakness defending route one. He said we defended as well as Manchester United and Chelsea from set pieces and open play; but not the long ball aimed down the middle and he would address this.

He also said he wanted a creative player and told Ken Friar that he shouldn’t plan for much of a holiday as the phone would be busy. He was very clear that he did not want Hleb to leave. He said that he was sceptical that the Webster clause would be invoked. (This is probably a reference to the gentleman’s agreement between clubs not to do the dirty on each other). In Wengers own words, ‘we have lost one player and we do not want to lose any more’.

+1

Kaka has also commented on being a fan of the Arsenal game but we would never meet the wage demands no matter who it was.

Although I admire the club for it its a shame as we will probably never know the excitement of a really huge signing.

The Guardian Football podcast reckon that Flamini was on £5,000 a week at Arsenal! No wonder he left.

The word on the street is that Spurs wanted to buy him six months ago and Arsenal refused to sell him to Spurs. So, as part of the Defoe deal, Pompey agreed to buy him off Arsenal on Spurs' behalf and sell him to Spurs six months later.
