All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Saha needs to go...for free if need be. Until he goes, Ferguson is reluctant to bring a striker in because 'Saha might be fit'. A lot of rumours linking us to more midfielders which is a bit strange, maybe he sees an imminent retirement of one the old boys. Or sees Hargreaves as our new right back which I would be quite happy with in all honesty.

Completely agree

Indeed

and don't be suprised if it's Giggs

Lee Catermole to Wigan apprently would be a good signing for them

now to get rid of Mido and Donk

This struck me a few weeks ago - why did anyone start recounting Charlton's appearances unless for whatever reason they dont want Giggs as a player next season - and why is SAF so much more accomodating to Scholes than he is for Giggs with all this 1st name on the sheet for CL Final and all that (which he has been saying for months)

Apart from the Semi and a couple of other games Scholes has held back the team considerably over the last few months

I know about the suspension for the 99 final - and maybe if any player deserves it its Paul "Vanishing" Scholes, just think he is blinded by Scholes too much

Scholes missed the other Champs League final from being suspended (and I think he missed another from an injury?) So it would be his first and most likely last. Thats why.

Man Utd have only got to one Final prior to this one during Scholes's time (and I mentioned the suspension in my original post)

If his current performances warranted it then fair enough - however SAF was saying this when the performances were clearly not deserving of it

But we dont need him. We have far too many attacking players as it is, its the defence we have issues with.

I disagree.

At the back we have King, Woodgate, Hutton and Bale. That's a decent back four when they're all fit. Add another quality CB and we'll be sorted.

In midfield and attack, we're going to need several new players. It's obvious that Berbatov is off so we need someone to replace him. Modric should fill the AM position well but he'll need a decent DM along side him. Lennon might be off and Malbraque does a job on the left wing but I'm sure we could find better. That's potentially a whole new midfield for the 08/09 season.

I might have to get Keane on my shirt to be on the safe side. I'm sure they'll be a few shock departures before the end of the close season.

He was signed by Bruce Rioch, not Wenger.
And? The quote never specified a manager.

How many clubs actually make these so-called massive signings anyway? Maybe four or five clubs in the entirety of Europe, and none of them English (Madrid, Barca, AC, Inter, maybe Juve). These are the only clubs that ever truly tempt the big-name players away from already top sides. All the rest simply get them from teams below.

Even Man Utd, or Liverpool, the supposed bigger spenders than Arsenal, haven't signed anyone particularly massive at the time of purchase (that I can remember). Torres was highly rated, but still a mid-table Spanish striker. Ronaldo still played in Portugal. Tevez came straight from Argentina (via his London gap year).

I guess you could make a case for Chelsea too (Ballack, Shevchenko, Crespo), but they've still had a ton of trouble getting the truly big names in, and of those few, most have seemingly turned up just for an easy pay day.

Dennis Bergkamp?

At the time it wasn't a signing of the magnitude of a Ronaldhino or Kaka. He had a couple of bad seasons in Serie A where his form was very poor by his standards before moving to us.

We've had some good signings in the past. I remember being excited about the arrival of Jennings, Sunderland, Overmars, Bergkamp, Platt, Henry, Silvinho, Nicholas. Even Glenn Helder :) We've never had that jaw hit the floor signing though although many of them have gone on to become World Class. I think the one that was a step back in amazement signing was Campbell.

Most of our signings are either relatively unknown or at a down point in their career. We've never had the top end financial clout to do a lot else.

Sorry but that is nonsense. Scholes hasn't been at his best this year but he has been UTD's best midfielder this season, as he was last year. He has good against small teams and great against the big teams, which is what you want from a player at Scholes age. Seems you have to grow dreadlocks, do summer-saults and needless backheals/stepovers to be a great UTD player these days.

Scholes has had games this season which have completely passed him by (man city is a big example). However he has generally been fairly solid, especially recently. Carrick has been our best MF this season though by far.
