£500 runaround. Volvo 850?

the old 740s are some of the most overengineered cars of recent(ish) days - and you can pick a decent one up for very little. thirsty tho, especially the turbos

is it worth getting an 850 2.5 with poor mpg for £1000 against getting a mk3 mondeo 2.0 with better mileage for nearer £2k?

I reckon their is a shortcut tab in this forum with "Mondeo" on it.:)

I thought this one was £500?

Volvos are more durable. They tend to fail MOTs on tyres and bulbs. They don't rust.

I don't know how bad the MPG is on the example quoted but geneally i'd rather have a volvo :)

yeh, my question was slightly ot :p

looking to buy something similar soon, but alas on the continent, where used car prices are much higher
you won't be able to find a mk3 in good condition and without moon mileage for under £4k tbh

I got an old Jag at 21, old man cars when you're young are awesome. I might reverse the theory too and get a hot hatch at 60? :D

And if you're getting just 22mpg out of a Vectra, Expect 18-19 from the Volvo!

ive managed around 30-33mpg out of my 740 2.3 n/a on a long trip before. (around 400 miles to £45)

Could probably of had 420 miles but didnt wanna push it!

I'd get the Volvo over a Mondeo for that price.
The 850's here are far more expensive than there, and they come with galactic mileages ( seen an ad for one for 3k ( a T5 though), and it had driven 330,000 kM's).

They come with more Luxurys.
They come with more power. ( 125kw/168 horsies on the stock, 222 hp (166 kW) on the Turbo)
And they are generally reliable.

For that price I wouldn't think too much and get an 850 above a Mondeo.

My mates dad has an 850 T5, and when my mate was driving it, it accelerated quite well and was comfy to sit in too.

aye, it's a joke
can't believe how much more expensive second hand cars are in benelux/germany

i guess its because tax on new cars i so much higher on the continent than in the UK, people don't buy new cars as often, and thus 2nd hand cars command higher prices
