Hi all,

I'm looking for a bit of help, I'm building my first gaming PC rig.

I got all my other bits and bobs for it but im still a tad unsure on graphics cards. I want to get a nVidia card so obviously it works with the mobo I've bought.

I'm currently looking at possibly getting an:

nVidia GeForce 9800GTX 512MB PCI-E 2.0

However im just wondering if there is any difference between the 8800GTX or even the 9600 Series.

Just wondering if you can point me in the right direction. I dont want to splash too much out ~£150 is about my limit. Might be willing to pay out a bit more if it will be worth it.

I'm also considering for SLI in the future, so would getting an 8800 be an issue as they are not being made anymore :confused:

8800GTX has 128sp's and a 384bit interface, a 9800GTX has 128sp's and a 256bit interface but the 9800GTX is also clocked higher and pulls away from the GTX but looking around the forum it would seem that the 8800GTX is still best for high res and AA due to its larger memory interface.

I take it the 9600's are not as good as either the 9800 or 8800 then ?

It's just as saying before i would like the idea of maybe getting another card in the near future to SLI.

I'm just a tad worried that if i go with the 8800 i might struggle to get a matching card.

With two 9600's you wont get better, (or much better?) performance than a 8800GTX, the idea of SLI might seem appealing. But realisticly you get a relatively poor performance boost , and higher electricity bills.

If you must SLI 2X 8800GT's or 8800GTS's would do you well.

Any suggestions on best place to acquire one ? does OCUK still got some in stock or will i have to resort to flea bay...

Soz bit of a noob here ;) I've heard something about new cards in july ?!?

Think they will be a lot better than the 8800GTX ?
Cost is a factor tho will think when they are released it will cost an arm and a leg
 
Well, historically, the top of the range new card should be around £350-£400, and all the lower ones will be no match for the 88, so why would anyone wait.
As has been said multiply here, they are not "new cards" the are 8800's with more of them on a single card.
Which, if you ask me, will perform like dual and quad cpu's do.....ie 3 cores do absolutely nothing all the time while one core that was slower than your old single core CPU does it all.
 
well nvidias top cards usually cost a lot 350£ + but. as i heard gt200 has 512bit but r700 has the same amount + ddr5 ram as i heard and usually they much cheaper

so if i was u i would wait for them and if they end it up expensive then the 8800gts 512mb and 8800gtx & 9800gtx should drop prices quite fast

I've have noticed that the difference between the 8800 GT and GTX is quite a jump so is it really worth it the guy above me said 8800 GT is best value for money. Will i still get quite high quality res and games like Crysis be able to jack the graphics to high and still get good fps ?

And of course the 88's are likely to come down in price too owing to all the new kit obsessives wanting the 10's.

Well i mean i was just using Crysis as an example. I mainly play WoW. But do want it to perform FpS games too and RTS games well.

As for res im using a 19" widescreen monitor atm (if thats any help) cant remember the res on the comp ive got atm. (at work)
But i am thinking of upgrading to a 24" screen soon once ive got this new rig together.

What about the GTS series also would they maybe be worth looking at. I think ive come to the conclusion i want to go for a 8800 as to which ver is still debatable.
 
8800GTS is a feisty little card, 3/4 as many stream processors as the GTX, but clocked (or can be clocked) higher.

I had a 340MB version and it kicked ass, and the GTX I upgraded it too was certainly no huge leap.
Apparently it's the 512MB GTS you want but, it seems to be the one most people praise.
 
There's very little difference between the new 8800GTS(512MB) and the 9800GTX in terms of performance...and that gap is easily bridged with some overclocking, so the 8800GTS is a very good card for the price.

The 9800 GTX is essentially an 8800 GTS 512mb, it just has a couple of differences, it has an extra SLi connector so it can be TRi SLi'd (where as the GTS can only be SLI'd), it also has an extra power connector, different memory chips, also the name has been changed, oh and its longer, so if your only going SLi and not Tri SLi (which would also require a mobo with the extra PCI-E slot if you havn't got one already), then you may as well get the 8800 GTS 512mb seen as they are cheaper, as you would essentially have 2x 9800 GTX's in SLi, you just wouldn't have the extra SLi connector (which you wouldn't need anyway as your only going SLi), and you wouldn't need to plug 2x 6 Pin's in due to them only having the 1x power connector, and they would take up less space being shorter in length.

The 8800 GTS 512mb is an absolutely amazing price now as well, only £138. :)

The 9900's in July are supposed to be faster than 8800 GTX's, as they are supposedly like Intel's Core 2 Duo CPU's, as they will be the dual card 9800 GX2's on 1x chip, so they'll be proper single cards, where the 9800 GX2 is 2x stuck together, with one having its PCI-E slot cut off, and they also said not to be SLi.
