Arosa/Lupo engine tickover query.

Those are the ones that are prone to breaking down...

A set of genuine HT leads for my old Astra GTE were almost £150 from Poxhaull when I priced them up, and that was many years ago.

Back to the motor factors and the guy took them off the shelf, "hmm these won't fit your plugs, these need a thread and you've got a fixed stud" Main dealer only i'm afraid.

Now i'm scared.

you can always try vagparts.com if you can wait a few days for delivery, they can be cheaper than the main dealers

looks the same as my mothers 1.0 polo engines.

I got a set of leads for £30 from local motorfactors and they had them in stock

Have you tried German Swedish & French in Valley Road? Website shows £26.50+vat, but they only show one type for the Arosa...

Main dealer prices arn't all that bad (for some things), a set of new coils wasn't that much more from VW than the internet.

Well worth giving them a call first!

Absolutely doing my nut trying to find the fault now, i've had the leads off, shorted to a bolt, good bright spark, then a plug on the end, still a good spark, so it's CAN'T be anything ignition related, can it?

Blocked injector maybe?

Off with the airbox, dig through a load of pipes and wiring and pull the injector bar, turn it over and they're all spraying fuel, so it's not that either. I swapped the 1st & 2nd injectors to do a bit of testing and button it all back up.

Still missing :(

Pull 2nd injector plug and nothing changes, so it is definately number 2 cylinder causing the problem. Swapping HT leads is a snag as they're "cut to fit" jobs and don't reach, but when i swapped the lead from number 1 to number 2 the problem moved to number 1 (because it's got no lead providing a spark i'm guessing!), and removing the injector plug to number 2 caused it to have a fit, so it IS a spark problem.

She's back on the road for tonight, it's not misfiring, but the tickover is still lumpy.

Main dealer - £13 for one lead (which is all i need), should be here by monday.

However, my SJ is currently off the road as it appears to be missing it's longest HT lead ;)

HT leads only break down under high voltage, which happens when the spark plug is subject to cylinder pressure. In open air it takes far less voltage to get a good spark.

Grrr, Now the bleedin gearbox has started whining it breasticles off, according to several threads on club lupo it's the first sign of the box expiring. Kerching!

Wondering if i should have moved that indian burial ground now :(

i wouldn't worry, the gearbox whine may be the first sign but it'll take ages before it gets drastically worse.

it'll also be far more noticeable to you as you're used to the noise of the car pre-whine, chances are a potential buyer won't even notice that the whine isn't meant to be there, as was the case with my old 6N2 polo :)

I'm waiting for the local dealer to get the gearbox oil back in stock (original spec stuff is discontinued and the parts bloke had to ring another outlet to get the new part number, only slightly worrying!) and i've got a tube of Forte Diff & Gearbox gunge i can chuck in to hopefully shut things up.

Wife would rather drive the Seat with a noisey box than go in the Megane, fussy mare!

i tried a full gearbox oil change and adding some wynns stuff prior to selling but it actually made it sound worse. Curse the early 2000 lupo/arosa/polo chocolate gearboxes
