Hi,

Finally decided to improve my socket set and ratchet. So yesterday I went to Halfords, bought the top Halfords pro 1/2" and 1/4" drive ratchets. Then went to find some imperial sockets on a rail, guess what, they don't sell imperial! So yes, I am wanting some good quality 1/2" and 1/4" sockets in AF, though I'd rather it didn't break the bank.

might you get better value at machinemart or screwfix? Obviously you still need to research what to buy I'm just slightly sceptical about Halford pricing. Even better, go and see the Snap On Tools Man in your area? Won't be cheap tho.

Yup, that's why I didn't even think to check! But I asked a mate who works there and yes he confirmed it.

mattpc, I have a Halfords trade card which helps with the pricing, makes the Halfords Pro stuff quite a good buy really, and the lifetime guarentee is useful. Snap on is too expensive for me I'm affraid.

That's got to help. I will say that my halfords pro ratchet flexi spanners are excellent quality and have conquered where my inferior tools failed in the sense of them not stripping thread, fitting into tight spots etc etc. Qualitywise I can't complain. They were expensive however. Trade card should really help with the pricing I guess.

Edit 2: Any of their Walldrive sockets are awesome. I haven't rounded anything off since I've had the set and they seem to be able to grab hold of even the mankiest of old bolt heads.

Seconded. I've got a full set of the coloured metric walldrive sockets and they're fantastic for using on manky old rusty bolts.

Doesn't stop them shearing of course but then you can't have everything :p

Bought some smoos ones off Ebay aaaages ago and they are still fine and look good ;) They have took abuse from breaker bars and impact wrenches etc.

toolstoday.co.uk is my favourite, they stock sealy, teng etc an are a bit cheaper than screwfix for some stuff anyway

As Jonny69 has said, the sealey tool sets are great, dads got a massive set in a metal tin.. seem to be able to remove any bolt / nut with them :D

Only problem is Sealey use some stupid plastic mould thing to hold all the sockets which lasts about 5 mins :|
