Students...all ****ers?

This means exactly what is says...
Not everyone is good enough to go to university. However, in the name of equality, New Labour has made just about every single exam far easier. They have put great pressure on top universities to accept students by their backgrounds and achieve unrealistic quotas or, they risk losing their vital government funding.
Earlier in the thread, Visionary, there were rumblings of finances and lack of responsability on the part of students. The fact that too many students are being accepted is due to the entrance not being hard enough. With harder requirements, the best get in, those who need support get it.
Rather than overcrowding universities and getting underqualified people in.
Remember the day when student loan got paid in? "Pay day" "loan day" etc etc. Then this would promptly be jizzed up the wall on a new TV, xbox, playstation etc.
People are not in general able to handle themselves or think for themselves either. Too many thickies are let in each year: for equality's sake.
bugger that.
And no, as anyone with any brain whatsoever will realise, not all clever students are rich! But is it always the privileged kids who act like scum? Quite possibly.

Voltar, I asked what loans have to do with anything? I seemed to me like you were saying lots of people need loans to go to university and so shouldn't go. I agreed that university should be limited to the academically elite, but finances have nothing to do with academic achievement.

so we agree. eventually ;)

the usage of loans however, in my books represents a certain lack of maturity amongst students as many have said to me: 'why don't you get one? It's pretty much free money after all...'
Anyhow, yes, loans don't have anything to do with academia. With maturity could you not argue yes?

errr actually the mature and sensible thing to do would be to get the loan whack it in an isa pay it off at end of course an pocket the interest.

Also gives you a reserve/back up in case something unexpected happens.

put it in an isa... do you know how much money you'll actually stand to make off your £1500 pa or whatever it is? Not a great deal tbh. Investing £1500 on the stock market is hardly worth it either. I looked into this in great detail and the amount you actually stand to gain is very little indeed. Plus you can't access an ISA at your whim (or so I'm told). Also you have to pay back the loan which does have interest on it contrary to popular belief.
Show me some figures Tefal.

loans total 6k iirc.

3k tuition 3k accommodation.

or get an online account with hsbc as well 5% interest (or was most online accounts are around that )

Interest on the loan is under 5% so thats a profit + you have 6k in case something unexpected happens, much better than something going wrong and finding your self financially screwed.

And it's worth the minuscule amount of effort for the security + a small profit.

But then again I'm sure it's far more mature to live by the skin of you're teeth, and pass up the chance to make a small profit, and learn abit about handling money/savings.
Then theres your grant too + your bursaries from the uni.

It depends where you are, step away from the ***** unis and people tend to be more sensible and whilst can be immature at times, is no real problem. End of the day I'd rather live and be friends with the people I have instead of boring geeks.

6k per year? You're aving a laugh mate. That's the max isn't it? They are means tested too which means I'd probably not get that much.... Bursaries and hardship funds are means tested too.
I'd not have access to these irrespective of whether I recieve a ton of family funding or not (the case is that I don't).
But if it were possible to attain the highest loans poss as well as other benefits then yes Tefal I'd agree with you immediately.
However, with means testing I personally would be ineligible.
Plus my fees are normal and not the new topped up ones. So 1.1k per year still or thereabouts.
And no need to be sarky "far more mature to live by the skin of you're (poor grammar) teeth."
Surely it's more responsible to not accrue debts?

Tis what i get. iirc loans arn't means tested only the grant.

Not all are some are Dependant on your course + grades alone.

Even if you only get 1.5 k that you don't need (which presumably you don't as you don;t get the loan) is worth it for the security + the small profit for little effort.

But you're not spending the money, and if you do it right making a small profit and can pay your loan back immediately at the end of your degree.

i get told i'm immature all the time but I love it.
It's better than being boring.

though i wish i wasnt a student because my course has being boring and pointless for me. im scraping by.
Oh well.. 1 week and its finishin time.. the question is now will i even graduate?

a lot of wealthy kids do act like scum at uni, they are let off the reigns and have no sense of responsibility etc, they are also up themselves. Less well off kids do it too though, its just you dont notice them as much due to the fact they are not ALWAYS out etc and living it large due to being poorer.

I got £3500 as a maintenance loan and £3100 as tuition fees. No laughing matter at all, I'm the one who has to pay it back and its only just enough to pay rent, let alone feed me and pay for course materials (doing art so need lots of paint etc.). It actually really annoys me that my parents earn too much for me to fit the quota that enables me to be able to go on art trips and buy new canvas's, especially as i see nothing from them save a tenner if they come to visit. I never ask them for anything and in order to pay for things i have to work. Yet there's all these other kids that have started the course, acting like **** and getting the full amount of loan for them to blow it all on going out drinking and paying to dress up in stupid costumes all the time. Call me a whining old fool but it hardly seems fair. Surely every student should get the same, then if their parents can afford to give money to them that's their prerogative, my parents shouldn't be expected to give me over £1000 a year because they're income fits that certain bracket.

I strongly agree with the above.
I do not need loans, my parents pay my way through Uni, even my rent and £60 a week for bills, gear(not drugs!) and food etc, but I know people who get grants etc for having lesser off parents, but the lesser off parents give them money.. or they live with lesser off parents.

Its stupid, just like college at EMA, it encourages the lesser off to go to uni, most of who will clown around on a silly degree and get lower debts because of government incentives, whilst the rich can do the same because they have wealthier parents, and then the middle classes get stuffed because they dont have parents with as high incomes, norr do the government feel the need to encourage more into uni.

Retarded system.
Why cant I have a grant like the lesser off kids so that my parents dont have to fork out as much?

I stayed at home becuase my parents situation meant I had to pay my own fees and was entitled to only the bare minimum loan. I felt that, post 18, I shouldnt expect them to throw thousands and thousands of pounds a year at me becuase of MY decision to stay at Uni.

Shame really as the government would have paid me a fortune to go wherever I wanted had my Dad run off with a bimbo and my Mum worked 10 hours a week at Tesco.

Being a student i'm going to have a slightly biased view here but there we go.
Pretty much everyone I know likes to get drunk once or twice a week and thats about it. We're normal guys, play pro evo, play footy, go to the beach etc and tbh we are like most of the people at our uni.

Sure there are a fair few idiots (lived with them in first year) but you just ignore them and they calm down.

The geeks do nothing but play on their laptops in the bar which is pretty pathetic tbh, wouldnt want to hang around with them

inconsiderate, selfish and immature

add to that lazy, apathetic and rude. :|

When i was at uni i didnt have the brass neck to ask or even expect the library to provide me with a pen, paper, stapler, calculator, paperclips, envelopes etc (for free)

They do it all the time now.... its a sign of the times...shocking imo.

have you got a pen? have you got a stapler i can borrow? can i borrow an envelope? (so ill get it back then??)

have you got a ***** brain you should be asking....jeez!
