All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

Smith looked alright in his last season at Man U because he was been carried by a fantastic team.

Even then, the only game I saw where he did anything good was the Roma thrashing.

I think even I'd be semi-decent up front with Rooney.

Now he's moved to an average team where he's expected to do something, he's been found out for what he is.

Great work ethic, zero talent.

Apprently Steve Sidwell has told his agent he would consider a move to the boro if chelsea want to sell him, hopefully chelsea will want to sell him and hopeuflly he wont want ridiculous wages as i'd love to see him in a boro shirt

heh if we win the cl we'll probably actually have ended up paying the 18.6mill for carrick due to him fulfilling all the performance clauses etc.

well worth it.

jesus seems some peeps on here really dont know what the hell there talking about.

His best days were at Leeds. He seemed to have fullfilled his potential there and then, not that there was a lot of it to run to fullfill as he never had that many decent attribues. He looked his best when we got relegated as he was fighting all the way but that just won't work when you don't have the technical ability to match..

Alan Smith, when played up front with Rooney, was a great little player.
I would have him back for next season over almost every other choice out there.

Haha, not to pick on just you but some of the opinions regarding Alan Smith are laughable in this thread. He has a great attitude verging on the over-aggressive but has none of the ability to back it up, he can't finish, can't head, can't pass, can't tackle, all he does is "get stuck in" and that's **** all use at the highest level.

are you actually a man utd fan ? did you actually watch any of the games he played in last season ?

he was verging on the best player on the park in a lot of games, but hey hes been played out of position at newcastle he must be poo.

He's played plenty of games up front, he's just been rubbish, it's no coincidence that we started winning when Smith was dropped.

Smith was excellent when he first joined us, kept us going while RvN was injured. I would have kept him at United last summer as he gave us a different option.

Kaka could join Newcastle and he'd look rubbish.

You're just making yourself look like an idiot with comments like that. Owen and Martins manage to score goals why can't Smith? Beye only came to England this season and has been fantastic, Smith has been here years (i.e. doesn't need time to settle in) and has been woeful.

This from NUFC.com after the Chelsea game sums it up for me:

Our demise began with the withdrawal of Viduka at the interval and his replacement with the headless chicken that is Alan Smith, turning back the clock to our victory-free, incoherent non-performances.

Thanks.

Its not as if Smith is the only one. Some United fans on another forum I visit were talking about wanting Barton at United before he signed for you, now look at him, even more average than he was at City. When Duff was at Chelsea he used to scare defenders ****less, now look at him.

Kluivert was one of the best strikers in the world. Stick him in a Newcastle team and look what happens.

Luque was pretty good for Deportivo, stick him in a Newcastle team and look what happens.

Nicky Butt was awesome for us and had it not been for Fergie converting Scholes to a midfielder at the start of the 96-97 season he would probably still be in our team now. He was also one player who actually played well for England in 2002. Stick him in a Newcastle team and all of a sudden he's distinctly average.

Most of those you mentioned came for the money, it's nothing to do with the club. Given, Martins, Shearer, Woodgate, Speed, Beye etc. (list is too long) plenty of players who have came to Newcastle and either stayed the same standard or got better.

Thinking logically, what could it be at the club that makes the players worse? Or is it simply down to the individual.

As for the ones you mentioned: Kluivert was out of contract and hardly had many clubs after him, Duff wasn't in the Chelsea team and Barton has picked up form now but was out for ages with a broken foot.

They are very bad examples.
Barton = Season disrupted with injuries and jail time.
Duff = Constantly injured
Kluivert = Well past it before he came to Newcastle. Come on!
Luque = Injury prone and just didn't adjust to English football
Butt = Always been a fans favourite as far as I'm aware so he must be doing something right?

I wouldn't say Kluivert was well passed it at all, he was what? 28 when he joined? Injury prone maybe but when he played he looked nothing like the player he was.

Stephane Guivarch won the world cup then came to Newcastle, and look what happened :p (although you could say that about Kleberson/United too).

Bramble, at the time was seen as quite a talent. He was a big factor in Ipswich coming 5th in the premiership the one year. Now look at him since he moved to Newcastle.

They are just individual cases though. You mention Kleberson and there are plenty more: Djemba Djemba looked decent before Man U and Forlan was highly rated and I'm sure there are many more along these lines.

Yup but our good buys far outweigh the bad ones. Not sure Newcastle can say the same, especially when they should be pushing for a European place every season.

Since the first Keegan era the club has been a mess and its no surprise players fail to perform. I remember reading about Souness joining in a training session and clattering into Bellamy once, I mean come on! :p

Probably because you have a lot more buys, whereas fat freddy paid for the odd big transfer and nothin else.
Im siding with the mag here, Smith has had plenty of time to proove his worth for Newc, he should be playing for a lower table club(not classing newcastle as one due to current form - they wont be battered that badly next season, especially if the cash splashing happens)

A lot more buys? We signed 4 players last summer, one the summer before (Carrick), and two the summer before that (Park/VdS).

I don't think Smith is good enough for a top 4 team at all either. Only as backup/different option. However he's plenty good enough for Newcastle/Everton/Blackburn etc so long as the players around him actually play to their potential. All I ever see of Smith for Newcastle is him outnumbered and alone upfront, or being forced to play in midfield which isn't his position.

Souness was an embarrasment yeah. :p

But to be fair, we performed under Robson- finishing ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool- and that was with some rubbish players that Robson managed to get to perform somehow (i.e. making players better at Newcastle rather than worse :p).
