R4800 to be released after the GT200, says Tom's

One of the more significant things that I see here is the introduction of the "Game physics processing capability" I have to wonder what improvements if any this will introduce, is it just marketing? Nvidia have also been in the frame of recent with similar after they purchased PhysX but as far as I know and feel free to put me right here. Recent drivers are being used which boosts performance with PhysX based games on PhysX PPU’s and Nvidia based graphics cards.

Erm they already announced it, and it will work with current 8800 cards also. Practically guaranteed to lose FPS with 1 card

I heard some details about the drivers being released, wasn't sure on the gains/losses, but am finding it dificult to see where ATI's physics implementation fits in?

Well if ATi want to use physics then obviously the game developers will have to add the compatability into the games, so we will proberbly see games that support PhysX and then other games that support Physics for ATi or something like that, cant see a single game supporting Physics for ATi and Nvidia.

well as i read somewhere nvidia will have 512bit and ati will to but nvidia will use still ddr3 and ati will use ddr5 so ati will have more bandwidth and might use less power hopefully. and maybe get better performance and give punch to nvidia

Will read it from the top... It was heading into a debate about who has better driver’s way before I noted it. Are the drivers for these new cards mentioned anywhere in the op?

Anyway away from that, I hope ATI introduce some of the features stated in the OP. 7.1 sound over HDMI sounds really good providing their implementation of it is far better than the half hearted implementation on the 3xxx series of cards many of which had no real support, neither did they come with the required adapter from third parties who outlined on their packaging that they were capable of sound over HDMI.

Now years ago I used the HAVOK engine to programme a game for my Uni dissertation, this involved simply calling procedures and setting 3DS Max models with certain properties before bringing models etc into Director, now my question is this... If a game is optimised for one of these engines which is more likely to be PhysX with “TWIMTBP” games then why is ATI introducing physics on card with what is presumably its own implementation? In reality it will have very few games, if any games optimised for its use? Does anybody have any thoughts on this or is my understanding of physics processing on the GPU flawed?

Finally it is nice to see the lower power requirements of these new pieces of hardware providing these allegations are true we should be seeing more power from our cards with no more power consumption at the wall. This can only be a good thing.

good post! if they can deliver a card that's faster than my 8800gtx, provides 7.1 LPCM over hdmi and uses roughly the same power (less would be better!) then im sold. it just all hinges now on what nvidia can produce.

I just hope this does not mean we end up with more of a split in the pc game market and compatability issues due to hardware.

I really can’t see Nvidia resting on their Loral’s. I presume only time will tell.

No problems with NV driver here on Vista 64, even the majority of the betas were spot on, the latest WHQL set are the best to date. Why on earth would i want regular driver updates if everything is working fine as it is. I found ATI drivers to be resource hungry compared to NV, mind you ATI seem to have a lot of problems with just released titles, a monthly update is probably best for them, developers are mainly working with NV hardware, majority of the time NV drivers work spot on with all games. We don't need regular drivers, just the odd update if a game is causing particular
problems.

OT, If NV get their gear out before ATI and it is good stuff, ATI will need to get very close to them in the performance stakes to make any kind of impact in sales.

James, I have RTMED the thread and hope that the mods will step in.

Back on topic,

I really hope that both companies are competitve with performanc this time around - It will help push the market forward. It has been so stagnent recently :(

I am really looking forward to seeing the benchmarks on them, my 8800 GTS 320MB is struggling on my monitor and I want to give OCUK an order for a new GPU soon :p

It's a possibility that ATI settle into a role of providing good value low/mid range parts and that the only way they will outperform nVidia top single GPU is via an X2 card for the foreseeable future. They also seem to be moving into the HTPC market big time with decent, low power solutions (coupled with AMD CPU's) that will offer excellent HD/audio playback.

The OP asked that you keep the bitching out of this thread so why don't you do that, it's also easier just to suspend people than it is to clean up a thread so it's your choice now:)

Nice one JohnnyG...

It would be really interesting to see what ATI are planning on doing with crossfireX here; I would imagine people would be happy to keep current hardware and crossfire one of their new 4xxx cards into a 3xxx setup. I know I would in one of my rigs providing the support is there.

One of the real questions here is where Intel are currently with their desktop graphics solutions, with ATI and NV's desktop solutions and platforms being superior to the graphics capabilities of the Intel solutions. If it is indeed the case that PC gaming is increasing in size as EA suggest, can you see Intel sitting back letting AMD/ATI and NV reaping the rewards from a growing market?

oh no. if intel see a profitable venture, they will run at it like a bulldog lol. im surpised they've stayed out as long as they have.

I think Xfire 4870X2s will be for me if i can afford it :D. loving the ultra low power requirements though

Does anyone know if they'll be able to sort out the 'Xfire on a board' issues the 3870X2 has atm?

Anyone notice the statement about us not working in Europe in August? :D

I like the idea of improved colour depth (48-bit) but Vista/XP doesn't support it yet. HDMI 1.3(a) would also require supporting Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master-HD through a protected audio path, something that is not supported (finished) in Vista either!!

If it did have both I would jump on it in a heartbeat. All I would need is a HDMI 1.3 amp and I could be enjoying those lovely DTS HD tracks.

Wonder if the 4850 will be a good step up from my 8800GT, maybe the 4850 will be a minimal difference to the 4870 too like the 3870 and 3850 that would be good.
